Locals attend SkillsUSA state rally Members of the Apalachee High School SkillsUSA chapter traveled to Perry to attend the Georgia Skill sUSA Champions Rally. Chapter members compet ed in six competitions including the SkillsUSA Georgia Chapter Recruitment Poster contest (placing eighth); SkillsUSA Georgia Chap ter Recruitment Display (placing eighth); SkillsUSA Georgia Chap ter Banner; SkillsUSA Georgia Career Pathway Poster; SkillsUSA Georgia Career Pathway Display (placing eighth); and the SkillsUSA Georgia Chapter T-shirt. All members wore the AHS Skill sUSA T-Shirt designed by a club member. Three members partici pated in the Chapter Banner Parade and provided interesting facts about AHS. Chapter President, Imelda Gardu no. pledged for the chapter to have Schools seek parent input on improvements Local schools are seeking input on improvement plans. Each school in the Barrow County School Sys tem will hold meetings to get input from families and community mem bers as each begins to identify areas of improvement for the 2016-17 school year. Input is sought on: •school and district improvement plans •balanced scorecard goals •professional learning plans •federal program budgets and plans: Title I-A (academic achieve ment for disadvantaged students); Title II-A (leader, teacher and para- professional quality); and Title III (English learner and immigrant stu dent achievement) Schools will hold their compre hensive needs assessment stake holders meetings on the following dates: •Apalachee High School - March 17 at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. •Auburn Elementary School - March 8 at 5:30 p.m. •Bear Creek Middle School - March 29 at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. •Bethlehem Elementary School - March 15 at 6 p.m. •Bramlett Elementary School - March 17 at 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. •County Line Elementary - March 15 at 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. •Haymon Morris Middle School - March 8 at 6:30 p.m. •Holsenbeck Elementary School - March 17 at 6 p.m. •Kennedy Elementary School - March 15 at 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. •Russell Middle School - March 17 at 6:30 p.m. *Statham Elemen tary School - March 29 at 5:30 p.m. •Westside Middle School - March 29 at 5 p.m. •Winder-Barrow High School - March 14 at 6 p.m. •Yargo Elementary School - March 8 at 5:30 p.m. PLACES THIRD IN DISTRICT COMPETITION Competitors look on as Rachel Baker, a sixth grade student at Westside Middle School, com petes in the Georgia District 3 Spelling Bee competition. Baker places third in district spelling bee Rachel Baker, a sixth grade student at Westside Middle School, recently competed in the Georgia District 3 Spelling Bee competition. She placed third out of 23 spelling bee competitors from neighboring counties. Baker competed in 22 rounds. The spelling bee had a total of 38 rounds, and lasted three hours. Baker will serve as an alternate to the winner and runner-up in the state spelling bee. BAKER Local schools recognized for AP course offerings Two local high schools were recognized last week by the Georgia Department of Education. Apalachee High School and Winder-Barrow High School were recently recognized for their Advanced Placement programs. Both schools were recognized as an AP Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) school and as an AP STEM Achievement school. AP STEM Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses. AP STEM Achievement Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses, and at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams earn ing scores of 3 or higher. Ellington honored at Mercer Univ. Kaitlyn Ellington, of Winder, was named to the Mercer University presi dent's list for the fall 2015 semester. Ellington is a junior in the College of Lib eral Arts. Inclusion on the pres ident's list requires stu dents to meet rigorous grade-point-average stan- Headmaster’s Corner by Steve Cummings SIXTH GRADERS TO FLORIDA - Our 6th graders have been in St. Augustine, Flor ida this week on their annual class trip. This year’s class vis ited the famous Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. This fort, built by the Spanish in the 1670’s, changed hands 6 times before being reclaimed by the United States government following the Civil War. Our 6th graders also visited the Old Jail, the Fountain of Youth, and the Museum of Avi ation. They wrapped up their trip on Thursday with a visit to the Kennedy Space Center. Thanks to all those who helped make this trip a great and memorable experience for our kids.
