Alarmingly, the state ranks ninth in the United States in domes tic violence homicides and number one in teen dating violence. Last year, there were 139 domestic violence relat ed fatalities in Georgia, Tammy Lester, a legal/out reach advocate for Peace Place, said. “It’s the highest Geor gia has ever recorded since they started tracking the fatality review report,” said Lester. Peace Place serves Bar- row, Banks and Jackson counties. Lester, who works as a legal and out reach advocate, spoke about what Peace Place does at the Tuesday, March 15, meeting of the Jeffer son Rotary Club. Photo by Katie Cofer Cooking continued from 5A Fried Eggplant Casserole Ingredients: 2 Tbsp. butter ] A cup flour 1 cup evaporated milk 1 cup water Vi tsp. salt Vi lb. sharp cheese, diced 1 medium eggplant 2 small onions 6 Tbsp. butter salt to taste Directions: Melt butter and blend in flour. Add liquids, stirring constantly as sauce thick ens. Add salt and cheese, stirring until cheese melts. Cover and keep hot over boiling water while prepar ing eggplant and onions. Peel and slice eggplant Vi inch thick. Peel onion and cut in Vi inch slices. Fry eggplant and onion in but ter over low to medium heat. Salt and cook slices from 4 to 5 minutes on one side or until delicately browned, turn and brown other side. Peace Place provides an emergency shelter for women and children escaping domestic vio lence situations, transition al housing, legal and child advocacy and a 24-hour crisis hotline (770-586- 0927). Peace Place is about “empowering victims and inspiring hope for future generations,” said Lester. Community members can help Peace Place by donating their time at the Peace Place thrift stores. “One hundred percent of the proceeds of the store go right back into the pro gram,” said Lester. “The thrift store is very import ant to us.” Through the thrift store, clients also receive vouch ers to provide belongings they may have lost in a domestic violence situ ation. as well as setting them up with furnishings and other items to set up home once they are ready to set up home again. Lester requested that the group take “the conversa tion” away from her pre sentation, as well as leave brochures in the commu nity. “It just starts with a con versation,” said Lester. “Be willing to talk about it.
