High School Tennis: Apalachee High School
Court excellence: AHS boys 7-0 in region
By Chris Bridges
Journal Sports Editor
T he Apalachee High School
boys tennis team survived
what coach Dan Woschitz termed
a “challenging week” with flying
colors.
The AHS coach noted that his
athletes would be facing Wind
er-Barrow High School on the
road and then hosting Gainesville
High School, both of which were
undefeated in Region 8-AAAA.
The Wildcats would then have
to travel to Flowery Branch High
School for a matchup with the
Falcons, who had lost only once
in region play.
“At the beginning of this week
I thought that we could play well,
but end up 0-3,” said Woschitz.
“However, I also knew that we
could also sweep the week and
put ourselves in the lead for the
No. 1 seed in the region.”
AHS responded to last week’s
opportunity by winning 4-1
against Winder-Barrow, then 4-1
against Gainesville and finally
a 5-0 sweep at Flowery Branch.
Those wins saw the Wildcats
improve to 10-2 overall on the
season and, more importantly,
7-0 in the region.
Chandler Hagan has been
enjoying an outstanding season
with an 11-1 record. His strong
play on the court continued last
week.
“It is not just Chandler’s play,
but the way he cares about the
team and works with other varsi
ty and young players that is fuel
ing this team,” said Woschitz.
Freshman Eli Hagan has also
been impressive as he remains
perfect on the season at No. 2
singles with a record of 12-0.
The No. 3 singles player, Cris-
tian Perez, has rolled to a 10-1
record, and he has clinched three
victories this year.
The team’s lone senior. Trey
Hayes, broke the school record
for career doubles wins March
15 against Gainesville with a
3-set victory. Trey plays No. 1
doubles with his brother. Davis
Hayes, who is a sophomore.
Apalachee’s No. 2 doubles
team is actually manned by four
young men who played junior
varsity tennis last year: juniors
Jonathan Fuller (3-2), Smiley
Marlowe (6-3), Jackson Wad
sworth (2-1) and freshman Luke
Woschitz (7-4).
The Wildcats return to action
after spring break by hosting
three matches from Tuesday
through Thursday against Cedar
Shoals High School, Discovery
High School and non-region foe
Dacula High School.

Coach Nicks says team set for stretch of quality opponents

Bethlehem Christian Academy’s
baseball team saw chances for
victory in a GISA Region 1-AAA
battle with visiting Trinity Chris-
tian-Sharpburg slip away Friday.
The Knights held a 3-0 lead
in the fifth inning only to see
the game’s momentum, and lead,
taken away by Trinity, who scored
four runs in the top of the sixth
inning.
BCA’s Jacob Parker pitched the
first four innings and while he
struggled some with control, he
did not allow a hit. Trinity’s only
baserunners during the first four
innings were as a result of walks.
The Knights put two runs on
the board in the bottom of the
third on a two-run single by Brad
Toxen. BCA added one more run
in the bottom of the fifth on a solo
homerun by Aaron Clifford.
In the fifth, however, the
Knights had a chance to put more
runs on the scoreboard as they
had the bases loaded with one
out. After Clifford’s solo leadoff
homer, Brady Stewart struck out
but reached first when the pitch
got by the catcher. Dillon “Chip”
Tallent then bunted Stewart to sec
ond. Toxen was hit by a pitch and
Ryan Whiting then singled to fill
the bases.
A strikeout and a ground out
allowed Trinity Christian-Sharps
burg to get out of the inning down
only 3-0. That proved to be a big
factor later in the game.
Caleb Hopkins pitched the fifth
inning for BCA with two strike
outs. Mikey Tucscano was then
called on to throw the sixth inning
but he ran into trouble allowing
three hits, two walks and four runs.
