The Game Plan
Midway through the Madness
I must admit, I took a heavy hit in
my bracket this year. I typically do
pretty well with my bracket for
the NCAA Tournament, but this
year was the first time I have ever
lost one of my Final Four selec
tions in the first round. Yep, you
guessed it, I had Michigan State
in the Final Four.
It was a tough pill to swallow.
I had the Spartans going all the
way to the National Champi
onship game and losing to the
Oklahoma Sooners (who I still
believe will win it all). It is sad,
the Spartans had such a great
team this year but somehow got
upset by a 15-seed.
It is so interesting, even though
I had the Spartans going deep in the
tournament and I was cheering for them
to win that game, there was still a huge
part of me that was cheering for Middle
Tennessee State to win that game — I
guess that’s what makes March Madness
so special. I can be disappointed about
my bracket later, at the end of the day I
got to watch an incredible upset.
Overall, my bracket is still doing pret
ty well. My other three Final Four teams
are still alive and doing well, and to be
honest, I did a pretty good job picking
upsets in the first round, including Yale
and Arkansas-Little Rock - although
my bold prediction of Stony Brook over
Kentucky didn’t turn out how I thought
it would.
The first round was so exciting, seeing
so many upsets really brought a lot of
life to the tournament. Unfortunately,
nearly all of the mid-major programs
that pulled off upsets in the first round
suffered heartbreaking losses in the sec
ond round. As it currently stands the
only “mid-major” program left is Gon-
zaga, which, to be honest, isn’t
really a “mid-major” anymore.
Still, this year has had
no shortage of memorable
moments. There have only
been a handful of blowouts,
a vast majority of the games
have been competitive, which
gives us hope for the coming
rounds.
Also, how about the ACC.
Wow, having six teams in the
Sweet Sixteen is unbelievable.
They have certainly shown
their worth this year, no doubt
about that.
I still think that this year’s
champion will come from the Big
12, but a shout out to the ACC, that’s
impressive.
We are at the point now where there
aren’t going to be too many more
“shockers,” unless of course Gonzaga
(11 seed) or Syracuse (10 seed) make
their way to the Final Four out of the
Midwest region.
After watching the first few rounds, I
wouldn’t be surprised to see teams like
Miami, Iowa State or Maryland com
pete for a Final Four spot. Again, I still
think we will see Oklahoma, Kansas and
North Carolina in the Final Four, but I
wouldn’t be shocked to see one or some
of them fall — especially now that the
Spartans lost in the first round.

High School Baseball: Region 8-AAAAA
AHS falls to Heritage, WBHS wins in seventh
Monday afternoon’s games for
Apalachee High School and Winder-Bar
row High School were an overall reflection
of how the 2016 season has progressed for
both teams to this point.
The AHS Wildcats saw a lead slip away
in a 6-4 loss to Heritage while the WBHS
Diamond Doggs scored the game-winning
run in the bottom of the seventh inning
with two outs to defeat visiting Salem
High School 4-3.
AHS (2-12 overall, 2-7 in Region
8-AAAAA) led 4-1 after Hunter Linhart
drove in two runs in the top of the fifth
but host Heritage would rally with five
unanswered runs,
WBHS (9-3 overall, 6-1 in region)
remained near the top of the 8-AAAAA
standings with its victory.
The Bulldoggs host the Wildcats Friday
with the two teams playing again Monday
at AHS.
