PAGE 2B BARROW JOURNAL WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 2016 The Game Plan Really, Villanova? W ith all the excitement in the NBA between the Warriors' dream sea son and Kobe Bryant's last season, I seem to have forgotten about the amazing NCAA Championship game from last week between Vil lanova and North Carolina. First of all, what an incredible game! I have seen many exciting NCAA Championships before, but last week’s game may be one of the best. That whole last sequence with both teams hitting incredible 3-point shots was unbelievable. First we had North Carolina's Marcus Paige hitting a ridiculous off-balance shot to tie the game at 74 with just a few seconds left. At that moment I thought that UNC was going to find a way to win. Villanova has always been a let down in the NCAA Tournament in years past, I thought that this year was going to be no different. But I was wrong. The Wildcats of Villanova found a way to beat the odds and win the Championship. And they did so in great style with Kris Jenkins’ heroic game-win ning 3-pointer. I can’t recall a better conclusion to a NCAA Championship game, and poten tially any other championship game, for that matter. It truly was spectacular to see the Wildcats beat the mighty Tar Heels of North Carolina. I stopped picking Villanova to do well in the tournament years ago. I used to always choose them to go far in my bracket and then they would let me down — so I stopped choosing them. And sure enough, I didn’t even have them making the Elite Eight in my bracket this year. To me, they were kind of like George town, a team that you always expect to do well in the tournament but — for whatever reason — never do. Well that couldn't have been further from the truth this year. Not only did they obliterate my nation al champion pick of Oklahoma in the Final Four (we'll talk about that another time...) but they also went on to beat what many people thought was the best team in college basketball in North Carolina. Kudos to the Wildcats. It is good for college basket ball to have a Champion like Villanova. They made both the current Big East Conference and the old Big East Conference proud in winning the championship. The Big East used to be the dominant confer ence in college basketball and it was sad to see them go. Villanova paid homage to that great conference and showed that the Big East is still a player in the college basketball world. Don't be surprised to see some NBA team try and snag Jay Wright away from Villanova in the coming years - especially if he has continued success. Wright, 54, has plenty of experience and could have a future in the NBA. But for now, it’s best to stay put with the Wildcats. No one really thought they had a shot this year, who knows what he could do with more attention and better recruits in years to come.
