WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2016 BARROW JOURNAL PAGE 3A Meet the candidates House District 116, Republican Primary Candidate: Terry England Office Seeking: Re-election to House District 116 Background/Personal Info: Barrow County has been my home my entire life, and four generations of my family have lived on our family farm in Auburn. My wife, Cindy, and I are active members at Auburn First Baptist Church. Cindy and I were high school sweethearts at Winder-Barrow High school and have been married 29 years this year. We have seen this com munity grow firsthand, and have shared in the victories and set backs with our neighbors. As a farmer and small busi nessman, I know the issues that face hard working folks in Bar- row County. That is why I first ran to represent our community in the Georgia House of Rep resentatives, and it is why I am running for re-election this year. Cindy and I were bom and raised here, and we plan to be active members of our community the rest of our lives. We want to do all we can to see that Barrow County is the best it can possibly be. What issues do you feel are most important in this race? There is no doubting that Geor gia is leading the nation out of the Great Recession. And Bar- row County is seeing the bene fits of this rebound and growth. However, creating and keeping stable, good paying jobs for our community is my number one priority. We have a diverse, edu cated, and motivated workforce in Barrow County and job cre ators are noticing. That’s why our unemployment rate has dropped almost 11 points to 4.7 percent in Barrow County. The additional funding we have committed to K-12 educa tion, our technical colleges, and the HOPE Scholarship are all in TERRY ENGLAND an effort to keep our brightest young people here at home and be able to provide them the good paying jobs so they can start their families here. Our infrastructure improvements allow our man ufacturers and other businesses to get their goods to the desired destinations faster, and we have spent the last 6 years drastical ly cutting taxes and eliminating burdensome regulations for large job creators and small businesses alike. Through this hard work and focus on job creation, Georgia is now the No. 1 state in America to do business. As Georgia pros pers, Barrow County will prosper as well. If re-elected, what would you like to get accomplished in the next two years? My first prior ity would be the same priority it has always been as Barrow County's representative in the General Assembly, which is to provide our community a voice and resource with their state government. The most enjoyable part of this job is being able to help the folks from home resolve their issues and concerns when they might not otherwise find a solution. I will also continue to work tirelessly to position Bar row County at the forefront of economic development in Geor gia. In addition, I will work to ensure Georgia continues to bal ance its budget, maintain our AAA bond rating, and avoid doing so at the expense of the taxpayer. As long as I remain the House Appropriations Chairman. Georgia’s fiscal house will be in order. How surprising has the neg ative tone of this race been to you? I have always focused my campaigns on the issues that are important to folks in Barrow County. In an effort to be acces sible to voters and their ques tions, I’ve worked hard to attend as many community events as possible following the legislative session each year to answer any questions or concerns on votes I have taken or specific areas of the state budget. Unfortunate ly, we have seen the negativity and shallow nature of this year’s Presidential campaign spill over into our community. I have no intention on my campaign attacking our opponent, her fam ily, or her personal values. That type of discourse turns folks off from politics, and it has no place in Barrow County. Candidate name: Lucretia Hughes Office seeking: House District 116 Representative Background/Personal Info: Lucretia C. Hughes received Associate Degree in Business Management and Administra tion from ITT Technical College and is currently working as a Financial Professional at Nation al Financial Services Group. A strong advocate for Religious Freedom, Stopping Refugee Resettlement in Georgia, and unnecessary tax hikes and state fees. Her professional interests focus on improving the quality of life for Barrow County residents. In addition, she serves as Vice President for The Lanier Tea Party Patriots and former Assis tant Secretary for the Barrow County GOP, and is a member of the Barrow County Republican party. She was recently honored by Speak Up Georgia for her contributions to the upliftment and advancement of the Conser vative Movement. She was also named to the Who’s Who Geor gia Conservatives. Lucretia C. Hughes was born in Commerce on June 19, 1974. She is a proud mother of four and grandmother of 5. She graduated from Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg S.C. in 1994. She returned to her Georgia roots in 1998. Since returning to Georgia Lucretia’s life has been placed on a collision course with serving others. During the first attempts to pass Obamacare, Lucretia real ized that our current Government officials did not have normal citizens’ interests at heart. She began to pay closer attention to State and Local officials and saw that the same things were occur ring right here. At that point she realized that if someone didn’t take a stand that we were doomed to be knocked down. As of March 11, 2016 Lucretia decided that she would take that stand for Barrow County. What issues do you feel are most important in this race? The issues I feel is most import ant in this race are: The increas ing taxes and fees on the middle class, 1st amendment, Religious freedom, Stopping/halting the Refugee Resettlement program and Common Core. What would you like to accomplish in the next two LUCRETIA HUGHES years if elected? Repealing excess taxes/fees, stopping the attacks on the 1st amendment. Religious Freedom for ALL, Halting the Refugee Resettle ment program and working with teachers about the failing com mon core standards. What inspired you to enter into this race? What inspired me to enter the race was the sponsored, amended and passing of the biggest tax hike in Ga his tory (gas tax) and HB370 in the original language. For our current Representative to burden the citizens of Barrow County and across the state with unfair behind the scene legisla tions is a smack in the face of every Citizen in Barrow County living within a budget. While our current House Rep resentative has over $500,000 in campaign contributions (major ity are from big businesses), is currently on five different Com mittees and the Chairman of the House appropriations where all spending originates; these were a turning point in my decision to run. So I decided to stand up for everyone that couldn’t or wouldn’t make a stand. HB370 in the original language is what cemented my decision.
