Nelson-Ododa, who helped the Lady Bulldoggs to a state runner-up this past basketball season, was recently one of only 12 players named to the roster for the 2016 USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship team. A total of 139 players competed for one of the 12 roster spots. The players selected are currently in Colorado Springs for train ing camp before departing on June 15 for championship play, set for June 22-July 2 in Zaragoza, Spain. Also named to the team were: Janelle Bailey (Providence Day School/Matthews, N.C.); Jenna Brown (The Lovett School/ Marietta); Samantha Brunelle (William Monroe H.S./Ruckersville, Va.); Charli Collier (Barbers Hill H.S./Baytown, Texas); Aquira DeCosta (St. Mary’s H.S./Stock ton, Calif.); Maya Dodson (St. Francis H.S./Alpharetta); Destanni Henderson (Fort Myers H.S./Fort Myers, Fla.); Taylor Mike- sell (Jackson H.S./Massillon, Ohio); Sedo- na Prince (Liberty Hill H.S./Liberty Hill, Texas); Abby Prohaska (Lakota West H.S./ Liberty Township, Ohio);and Christyn Wil liams (Little Rock Central H.S./Little Rock, Ark.) The 2016 USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship Team will be led by Dori Oldaker, head coach at Mt. Lebanon High School in Pennsylvania, with USA assistant coaches Dianne Lewis of Thomas Edison High School in Virginia and Saman tha Quigley, who is the head mentor at the University of St. Francis (NAIA). Countdown to kickoff... SUMMER WORK The Winder-Barrow High School football team began summer workouts last week as the 2016 season approaches. The Bulldoggs will face Flowery Branch High School in a preseason scrimmage before opening the regular season Aug. 19 at Clarke Central High School. The 2016 home opener will be Aug. 26 against Walnut Grove High School. Photos by Jessica Brown GEORGIA DUGOUT CLUB HONOREES This quartet of Winder-Barrow High School baseball players were recently recognized on the Georgia Dugout Club All- State team. Diamond Dogg players recognized include Beau Hanna, Will Hardigree, Trent Maddox and Pat DeMarco. High School Baseball Postseason honors roll in for Diamond Dogg players Pat DeMarco was recently named to the Georgia Dugout Club All- State baseball team for the 2016 season. DeMarco connected for 14 home runs this past season for the Dia mond Doggs, just two shy of a program record. He was named first team All-State as an outfielder. In addition. WBHS players Trent Maddox (infield), Beau Hanna (catcher) and Will Hardigree (pitcher) were each named second team All-State by the Georgia Dugout Club. The 8-AAAAA All-Region team was also recently selected and DeMarco was the Player of the Year. DeMarco was also named the Northeast Georgia Player of the Year by the Athens Banner-Herald. Maddox. Hanna and Tony Matos were also named to first team All-Region. Hardigree, along with Casey Thurmond, were named second team All-Region as pitchers while Zack Smith was named as a second team infielder. Look for the Barrow /oMraaZ/MainStreet Newspapers All-Area base ball team to be announced later this month.
