PAGE 2A BARROW JOURNAL WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2016 ENGLAND ATTENDS State representative Terry England attended the Winder-Barrow High School Hunger Simulation Dinner. Not an ordinary dinner WBHS FFA hosts Hunger Simulation event MAKES DONATION Winder-Barrow High School FFA alumni recently raised money through its Hunger Simulation Dinner. Shown are: (back row) Caleb Lee, vice president; Shana Tuggle, treasurer; Emily Hester, Shannon Derrick, Barrow Food2Kids coordinator; Ashley Burton, president; Katie Sonntag, chapter chairman; and Kerrigan Royster, sentinel; and (front row) James Hale and Ashley Cochran, WBHS FFA advisors. April Tuggle and Susan Burton, alumni, were also pres ent but are not pictured. In order to raise commu nity awareness about food insecurity in Barrow Coun ty, the Winder-Barrow Future Farmers of Ameri ca chapter partnered with FFA alumni to host the First Annual Hunger Sim ulation Dinner. The dinner itself was designed to bring awareness to the challeng es that many Americans face on a daily basis of not having enough food to eat, in addition to unemploy ment. unforeseen medical expenses, and having to choose between rent, util ities, medicine or food for the family. The WBHS FFA Hun ger Simulation Dinner allowed participants to experience the opportuni ties for the rich, while also experiencing the challeng es and real hardships for the middle class and poor in the Barrow community. Event tickets were secretly coded so when participants arrived they were seated in one of three classifications. The “rich group” had white tablecloths, ate steak and a delightful meal while being served throughout the meal. This was in con trast to the middle class participants who sat at cafeteria tables and made their own plates from a simple buffet; then the poor or lowest socioeco nomic class of participants were seated on the cold, hard cafeteria floor having only one small bowl of rice to share per 10 people. Later in the meal, real life incidents began to hap pen where a rich family’s stock portfolio crashed so they immediately moved to middle class. The middle and lower socioeconomic families had several inci dents happen to them like loss of jobs, death of a family’s provider, a child’s illness requiring hospi talization, or the loss of health insurance from job loss warranting their move to the poor class seated on the floor. By the end of the evening when all of life’s surprises had hap pened to families, there were 10 percent seated at the rich tables; about 35 percent were seated in the middle class, and 55 per cent were seated on the floor in the lowest socio economic class with little hope for help or food. “Unfortunately, these classifications and divi sions accurately reflect the Barrow community,” lead ers state. The student led Hunger Simulation Dinner “was a truly moving experience,” said Shannon Derrick. Barrow Food2Kids coor dinator. WBHS FFA president Ashley Burton asked par ticipants’ questions follow ing the simulation; “What group were you in? How did you feel about being in your group? What did you notice or feel about the other groups? What was surprising about this din ner? What moments were particularly challenging or made you think twice?” “As a Winder-Barrow FFA alumnus, what a privilege it was to attend the WBHS FFA Hunger Simulation Dinner.” said state representative Terry England. “The money raised will help the local food bank and the (Bar- row) Food2Kids program that provides bags of gro ceries every weekend to 240 Barrow county stu dents.” Items in the silent auc tion were donated by local businesses and individuals within the community, and proceeds from this event were given to the Barrow Foods2Kids program. In total $2,000 was donated to sponsor the First Bar- row Food2Kids Summer Pilot program which will run from May through July to feed 30 Barrow students in need. “Once, a teacher on the first day of school noticed a child who’d quickly fall en asleep in class,” orga nizers said. “She asked if he had eaten breakfast that morning and he answered, “It wasn’t my turn.” Hun ger is a very real problem in our community. Join the WBHS FFA students & alumni in being part of the answer in Barrow County.” To find out how you can help or donate to students and families in need, con tact Ellen Petree, BCSS school and community relations specialist at 678- 425-2913 or ellen.petree@ barrow.kl2.ga.us.
