The Game Plan
The Cavs found a way
It is still hard to believe that the Cleve
land Cavaliers defeated the defending
champion Golden State Warriors
in the NBA Finals. After a long
series filled with blowout games,
we all got what we wanted in the
instant classic Game 7 of this
year’s Finals.
The Warriors started with two
big wins to go up 2-0 before they
lost Game 3 in a similar fashion
that they won Game 2. Then the
Cavs went down 3-1 in the series
and it seemed like all hope was
lost. Once again, the analysts
made money by making crazy
statements like “the Cavs are
done” or “the Cavs have no shot.”
Sure, the odds were stacked against
Cleveland, but haven’t we learned by
now that anything is possible? Even
if it includes the 73-win Golden State
Warriors losing game 7 at home and
dropping a 3-1 lead in the Finals. Yeah,
it’s still hard to believe.
Game 7 was outstanding. It was a
close game from start to finish and had
an exciting ending. LeBron found a way
to will his team to three straight wins in
the Finals to beat a team that many have
been stacking up as one of the top teams
of all time.
There are so many different angles
to come at this, but let’s start with the
conspiracy theorists. Sure, maybe the
NBA did everything they could to have
a 7-game series for the NBA Finals —
even though that will probably never be
proven.
And sure, there were some question
able calls throughout the games that
seemed to go the Cavs way. But let’s be
real, even will all that on the table, the
Cavs still played three really good games
of basketball to win the series.
Especially LeBron James
and Kyrie Irving who sim
ply went off in the last three
games. LeBron has always
faced criticism in the Finals
and Kyrie was getting a lot of
it himself this year, but both
of them stepped up when it
mattered most. Not only did
both of them drop 41 points in
game five, but LeBron dropped
another 41 in game six. And on
top of that, both LeBron and
Kyrie had several huge plays in
Game 7 to get the win. Includ
ing LeBron’s amazing block on
Iguadala and Kyrie’s clutch three-pointer
towards the end of the game.
Cleveland can rejoice — they finally
have a championship! They have waited
52 years for a championship in a major
sport, and they finally have it.
Here are a few good questions to
think about moving forward: will this be
remembered as one of the biggest upsets
in championship history?
Will LeBron stick it out in Cleveland
the rest of his career to try to bring
multiple championships to his city? Will
the Warriors regroup and resign its key
players to make another run? Will these
two teams meet once again in next year’s
NBA Finals?
I sure hope the answer to that last
question is a yes.
