WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2016 BARROW JOURNAL PAGE 5A Letters to the Editor Libertarian Party column informative Dear Editor: I just read your take on the Libertarian Party. I was bom a Democrat, because of my parents economic status and views. After I got married and also a business owner. I questioned the Democractic party’s pol icies. Feeling left out, with no options or representation, I buried my head and hoped for the best. I did not not see eye to eye with the Republican mentality yet, and was staved off with high distain thanks to the bush clan. Having become politically awake again during the Obama introduction hoping for change. I was duped along with many many other fellow Americans. After his third year in house, I feard the worse, he would serve a second term. Once that happened I saw Hillary behind him like you see one identical soda can behind the other in a vending machine. Put your money, and the next clone comes out. I have never feared for my family and country as I do now with the horrible corpo rate pill we are being made to swallow. Are we to believe that Hillary or Trump are the best this country has to offer? No, these two people are the only options you will get from corporate banks and for eign interest whom are the actuall directors of this republic. Unless we all wake up and realize the joke that has been played on the Ameri can public. I have long believed that the two-party system was a crock, and now I am convinced. So thank you for your Libertarian 101 explanation. I have been thinking to go and educated my self on they’re policies, but could not get past my anger and disenchant ment of the federal government. I would rather suffer any torture than to vote for a criminal known as hilery or trump, someone who believes feeding a crowd made up words and half sentences of empty campaign promises to be President of the United States I will be looking into the Libertarian Party. Thanks for the third option wake up call. Sincerely, Allen Lopez Stoudenmire, Bruce to wed June 25 y- ■ ! 1 MISS STOUDENMIRE, MR. Barrow has a poaching problem Dear Editor: Barrow County has a big problem. One that I encoun ter every year. A problem that has put me at odds with a certain caste of people in Barrow County. The prob lem is poaching. Poaching is defined as the illegal taking of wildlife, in violation of local, state, and federal law. Poaching is trespassing on someone’s land to kill an animal, in season or out of season. Poaching is shooting ani mals from a moving vehicle or from the road. Poaching is using a spot light at night Poaching is using a feed or "kill” plot to attract the animals. Poaching is a crime: the person poaching is a crimi nal. Plain and simple. It IS NOT hunting. I own 25 acres along the Mulberry River. There is a wet land up river and down river from me. The area is mostly rural with a few “spot zoned’ subdivisions scattered in. I have deer on my property. I follow QDMA herd management practices. I track the deer on my property. I invite bow hunters to come and help maintain a healthy pop ulation. And I have a huge prob lem with poachers. Until last Friday, I had this big, beautiful buck with a trophy rack on the prop erty. Sometime early Friday morning, someone shot the buck from the road and just left it. Pretty sure, they left it because the rack got messed up. They used a large caliber weapon. It was still warm and seeping blood when we found it. It breaks my heart to think someone can do this. It was and is a waste. What this criminal did, (yes, criminal) was poaching in the worst kind of way — shooting from the road. They were shooting for the enjoyment of it. They were not taking an animal for food. They didn't care where their bullet landed. The official code of Georgia says “it’s unlawful to ... shoot across a public road or within 50 yards of a road.” O.C.G.A. A§ 16-11-103 It’s hard for me to under stand why poaching is such a big problem in Barrow. If you know something, say something, call DNR. But people don't do that. After all it’s not their land, it’s not their private property, it’s not their problem. But in actuality, it is their problem. A criminal is a criminal. If they think nothing of coming onto my property, they will think nothing of coming onto yours. They come onto my property to poach. They'll come onto yours to break into your tool shed, your car, your house, steal whatever they can get their hands on. When criminals get away with a crime, they grow bolder. DNR came out and is stepping up their patrols in the area. The officer, who came out, said he would let all the local officers know there is an active poacher in the area. We've added more cameras. Sad, I have their number on speed dial. Sad they know me and my property. Last year, DNR caught two poachers, right in my back yard. I don’t care if it’s my neighbor, your neighbor, your friend or your kin. If you know something, say something. Call the Department of Natural Resources at 1-800- 241-4113 or 770-535-5703 (Barrow Office) Or Call 911: while the local sheriff won’t arrest them, per DNR, they are supposed to hold them for DNR You can also email DNR. http://www.georgiawildlife. com/TIPemail. Sincerely, Jacquelin Twiss June 22, 2016 Headmaster’s Corner BOE CONSIDERS BIBLE CLASSES - Last week, the Oconee County School Board heard from a group asking for permission to release students from school to attend Bible classes off campus. The BOE did not vote on the issue. In 1962 and 1963, the Su preme Court removed prayer and Bible reading from public schools. In 1985, the Court held that a required moment of silence in public schools was unconstitutional. In 1992, the Court held that a school-spon sored prayer at graduation was unconstitutional. We teach the Bible every day at ACS. For those looking for a religious component to education, Athens Christian is the place. At ACS, a Christian education is more affordable than you may think. ATHENS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL “Affordable Quality Education Since 1970” K3-12TH CALL (706) 549-7586 www.athenschristian.com Online petition seeks to eliminate tethering of dogs in Barrow County An online petition drive is underway to try and convince Barrow County officials to outlaw tethering of dogs. In reponse to the recent extreme tem peratures and numerous concerns over dogs which are left chained up throughout the day, often without access to water or shel ter, the petition had already gathered more than 500 signatures earlier this week. The petition reads: “Barrow County needs to change its local ordinances for its county pets. We are asking that the Barrow County Government re-write new laws banning tethering and chaining in Barrow County, Georgia. Too many pets in our community are tethered and chained all day long in extreme heat conditions and extreme cold conditions. Barrow County needs to take a step forward to helping pro tect its community pets. Lead by example and others will follow the same path. Many pets get tangled on their tethering devices or chains and can’t escape the heat cold storms and so forth. Not to mention their water and food dishes being unreachable. We are not against people using chains and tethers to let their dogs go outside to use the restroom and play for awhile. We are against dogs that are left out on them 24/7. “We can easily achieve this in Barrow. The Barrow County Government keeps using the excuse it will increase the number of pets turned into the local shelter. It’s not an excuse that is acceptable to use anymore. There are plenty of low-cost fencing ideas to help people. We are not asking for them to fence in a whole yard. But have enough room for a pet to feel comfortable. We see this everyday as a community when we drive by and say I can’t do anything to help this pet because they are in compliance with the outdated laws in Barrow. You can make a difference sign this petition voice your opinion that you want this change to come to Barrow County, Georgia. “Tell the elected officials if they are not willing to improve conditions in Barrow County then they are not their to help the community they are elected to serve. And they will not be reelected next year. Stand up with Barrow County and ask for change for the community pets who can’t speak for themselves you are their voice.” The petition can be viewed and signed by going to Change.org or by viewing the Bar- row County Lost and Found Pets Facebook page. Petititon organizers plan to present the signatures to Barrow County Commis sioners at a future date.” Some muncipalities in Barrow County already outlaw the practice of tethering or chaining dogs.
