Winder resident Watkins joins U.S. Army
Taylor Watkins of Wind
er has joined the United
States Army under the
Delayed Enlistment Pro
gram.
The program allows new
recruits to delay report for
basic military training for
up to 270 days while they
finish their education and
prepare for their military
careers.
Watkins is a 2016 grad
uate of Apalachee High
School.
As a recruit. Watkins
will have many options
avaiable to learn new skills
while serving his country
and will become eligible to
receive more than $37,440
toward a college education
and $50,000 for repayment
of qualifying college loans.
Watkins will report to
Fort Jackson, S.C., for
basic training. He is the
son of James Watkions of
Bethlehem and Amanda
Hollifield of Winder.
After basic training,
he will receive advanced
individual training into a
career speciality prior to
be assigned to a permanent
duty station.

Local students earn
degrees from Ga. Tech
Several local students were among the 3,000 under
graduate and graduate students who earned degrees
from the Georgia Institute of Technology last month.
Those students included:
•Christopher Benson of Hoschton, bachelor of sci
ence in materals science and engineering
•Julia Huey of Hoschton, bachelor of science in
chamical engineering and bachelor of science in bio
chemistry
•Taylor Jacobs of Auburn, bachelor of science in busi
ness administration
•Christopher Lundy of Statham, bachelor of science
in civil engineering
•Andrew Moore of Braselton, bachelor of science in
mechanical engineering
•Mijua Moua of Hoschton, bachelor of science in
business admistration
•Doyin Oladimeji of Auburn, bachelor of science in
civil engineering
•Nicolai Popescu of Auburn, bachelor of science in
computer science
•Jessie Walls of Auburn, bachelor of science in
chemial and biochemical engineering.

Area teens invited to summer
events set at Winder Library
Area teens are encouraged to participate in “Get in
the Game: Read!”, the Winder Public Library’s teen
summer library program.
The library invites teens to come and take part in
special events created just for them and read for prizes,
including the opportunity to win a Kindle Fire.
Are you Dauntless, Amity, Abnegation, Erudite or
Candor? On July 7 at 3 p.m., teens can visit the library
to determine their faction and how they might handle
themselves in a post-apocalyptic world during Diver
gent Games.
Also on Thursday, July 15, at 5 p.m., teens are invited
to bring a pillow or blanket to settle in for the Teens’
“Summer Movie Night.”
Pizza, popcorn, and drinks will be provided by the
library. Finally, the winner of the Teen Summer Grand
Prize of a Kindle Fire will be announced. (Teens must
be present to win.)
‘Tweens and Teens (ages 12-18) may also attend all
free“Get in the Game: READ!” events.
“Every time ‘tweens and teens check out books
or audio books during the summer reading program,
they’ll be given a "scratch-off’ ticket for the opportu
nity to win an instant prize,” Winder Library officials
said.
