PAGE 2A BARROW JOURNAL WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2016 AMATEUR RADIO The Barrow Amateur Radio Club had their annual field day June 25-26. The field day is not just a local thing but a global one where all ham radio clubs simulate emergency scenarios. The goal of the field day is to quickly establish radio stations through the use of generators and make contacts across the local area and possibly the world. The field day lasted for 24 hours at the pavilion at the YMCA. Bill Wilson (left) and Dave Atwell work one of the three stations the club set up. Tips for being safe during July 4 holiday weekend With July 4 weekend quickly approaching, many families are getting ready to celebrate America’s Independence. It is a weekend that for many will be fdled with cookouts, family and friends. Another tradition that occurs is fireworks displays and both Barrow Counties public safety departments are asking citizens to prac tice safety this weekend. “Barrow County was listed as Severe Drought by the National Weather Service and has not had any measurable rain (before Monday) in over 11 days,” said Barrow County Emergency Services chief John Skinner. "This means there is a risk this weekend of grass and woods fire as a result of fireworks. We want to strongly encourage our citizens to attend some of the professional firework display and not utilize them on their own.” According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, unless Barrow County receives measurable rain before July 4, the county could be in the very high to extreme fire danger rating. This means that fires can start eas ily and grow very rapidly. Fires in this condition can be very hard to control and can become very large, officials said. According to the current weather predictions by the National Weather Service, there was a 50 percent chance of showers on Tuesday of this week. If there is no significant rain from this, there is only a 10-20 percent chance of rain through Sunday with highs in the upper 80s and lower to mid-90s. “This weekend we want citizens to have fun and enjoy the festivities," said Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith. “By playing safely, this weekend will be full of good memories and not tragedy. Two of the safest things that our citizens can do this Fourth of July weekend is attend professional fireworks displays and not drive while intoxicated.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the July 4 weekend is always the deadliest holiday of the year as a result of alcohol related traffic accidents during the last 25 years. Focal and state law enforcement officials will be out this weekend attempting to stop intoxicated drivers before they get into accidents. “If citizens drive while intoxicated they risk not only their own lives but all those lives around them," stated Sheriff Smith. “It is better to not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking than to risk killing yourself or someone you love. It can also take away the very freedoms we cele brate this weekend when you are caught.” Citizens who wish to attend professional fireworks displays, Barrow County will have four events occur ring this weekend. On Saturday, July 2, both the City of Auburn and the City of Statham will host events that will have a fireworks display. On Sunday, July 3, Chateau Elan and the Georgia Club will be host ing a fireworks display. On Monday, July 4, 12Stone Church will host an event that will also include a fire works display at Apalachee High School. “We want our citizens to make great memories this weekend as we all celebrate America’s Indepen dence,” said Chief Skinner and Sheriff Smith. "Please practice safety and enjoy your time with friends and family. We will have fire engines standing by at the professional displays and look forward to enjoying watching them along with our citizens.” Diabetes support group to meet Monday, July 18 The Diabetes Support Group’s meeting will be Mon day, July 18. at 6 p.m. in the third floor conference room at Barrow Regional Medical Center on N.
