Next up for the Lady Flawks is Friday’s game against nearby rival Dacula. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Dacula High School. “It’s a rival, so we definitely expect their best game and we hope to bring ours,” said Mill Creek head coach Brent Leitsch. RAIDERS FALL The Lady Hawks picked up their first region win last Friday night as they shut out visiting North Forsyth 2-0. Leitsch said his team played well. “We were really controlling the game - controlling the tempo. Defensively we were solid,” he said. “We had a pretty good all around game.” Hannah Hoffman scored both goals for Mill Creek. Junior mid fielder Colleen Foy assisted with the Mill Creek lost back to back region games this week to North Forsyth and Peachtree Ridge. The Hawks will be looking to end the losing streak as they travel to Dacula on Friday to take on the rival Falcons (5-2-1). Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Dacula High School. RAIDERS COME BACK Mill Creek lost its second region game of the season on Friday to visiting North Forsyth. The Raiders trailed the Hawks 2-0 at halftime. BY JUSTIN POOLE The Jackson County men’s soc cer team fell to Dacula Tuesday evening. The Panthers were overrun 12-0 by the visting Dacula Falcons. Jackson County looks to improve in their next match against North Oconee on Thursday, March 20. Coach Joseph Brubaker said that the Tuesday game was a learning experience for the Panthers. “I hope we were able to learn how to control the ball a bit better in pres sure situations,” said Brubaker. “We first goal. Senior midfielder Alexa Ruggieri assisted with the second. LIONS WIN Prior to the Peachtree Ridge game, Leitsch said the Lady Hawks would have to work hard to win. “Peachtree Ridge is a very good squad,” he said. “We’re going to have to play our very best game to have a chance. They’ve got some deadly scorers and we definitely have to have a plan to stop them.” One Lady Lion proved particu larly deadly for Mill Creek. Christine Watts scored four goals to lead Peachtree Ridge to a 4-1 victory. Tori Scalera scored Mill Creek’s only goal. The score was tied 0-0 at halftime, but the Lions scored a couple of early goals in the second half to take the lead. Mill Creek battled back to 2-1, but was unable to get any closer. Leitsch said the Lady Hawks con tinue to deal with several injuries and hoped to get healthy before the end of the season. but fought back to take a 3-2 win. Chase Beasley and Bryan Lainez scored goals for Mill Creek in the losing effort. LIONS DOMINATE After Saturday’s region game against South Forsyth was can celed due to inclement weather, the Hawks turned their attention to region foe Peachtree Ridge (6-1-0). The Lions shut out the Hawks, win ning 8-0 in the one sided victory. Greg Johnson scored four goals for Peachtree Ridge. sure did get to see how it should be done, watching Dacula. I think the guys are going to take a lot out of the season as we play so many young guys on varsity. We have to keep going to work on the practice field.” The Panthers are now 1-8 overall and will be facing North Oconee, currently 8-4, on Thursday, March 20 at Panther Stadium. After a week end break, Jackson County will be on the road facing Winder-Barrow on Monday. BY JUSTIN POOLE The Lady Panthers hosted Dacula, Monday night. For a team that barely has the requirements for team members, the fact that they took the field with a team that outranked them, but also brought in full JV and varsity teams, shows the determination that the Jackson County Lady Panthers possess. Dacula won 14-0 over the Lady Panthers. Jackson County is now 1-6 overall. “The ladies never gave up, they played hard until the very end,” said coach Cora Andrews. “We have had several injuries with girls out and that has drastically reduced our substitute potential. Some ninth and tenth graders have stepped up and played in several varsity games after playing full JV games. They are allowed to play 3 halves, so we have had to call on some in order to have any substitutes.” Despite what the scoreboard was showing the ladies were putting up a fight against dominating Dacula. MADISON On Monday, the team was at Madison where according to Fountain the team fell apart after three and a half innings. Madison beat the Panthers 11-1. Matt Broom persevered through four innings giving up two hits but walking eight. After three innings the score was 0-0, but in the bottom of the fourth Madison scored three runs. After a couple more errors the game ended due to the run rule. “We are a better team than what we’re playing right now,” Fountain said. “We show glimpses of being pretty good, but there is no con sistency. When you’ve struggled as much as this program has in the past, one of the toughest things to learn is how to be consistent. We’re going to go back to work at practice and start While the majority of the game seemed to be played at Jackson County’s goal, the team kept fight ing and was able to get into a scor ing position a couple of times. Andrews said before the game that the team had a lot of heart and that she was proud of them. “We have played some tough games, but it will definitely make us better next year,” Andrews said. “I am very proud of the girls, their work ethic and ability to keep focused and playing during the tough competitions. The Panther Invitational is scheduled for March 29 when we will play Franklin and Hart Counties. They will be in our region next year.” Jackson County is dropping to AAA next year. Before the invitational the ladies face Monroe Area and Winder- Barrow. On Thursday, March 20, the Lady Panthers are on the road taking on Monroe Area which is currently 3-5-1. Then next Tuesday, March 25, Jackson County will be at Winder-Barrow currently 5-5. spending a little more time on being consistent and how to respond to failure. Baseball is a game of failure and if every time something goes wrong you drop your head, things will get real bad real fast. Before you can learn how to win games, you have to learn how to respond to the little things that sometimes happen in baseball. Once you learn to respond correctly to those, you can start win ning games. I think our guys are improving and are learning how to win. It just doesn’t happen overnight. If my guys keep working hard and keep their heads up, we’ll be ok. We have got a chance to win some games and build some confidence going into the second half of the season.” The Panthers will be facing Heritage Wednesday, March 19, and then Eastside on Friday. Mill Creek’s Lady Hawks took sixth place in this weekend’s Oconee Barberitos Track and Field Classic. The Lady Hawks competed against 17 other teams in Saturday’s meet. The Mill Creek boys finished elev enth out of a field of 16 teams. Mill Creek will host Dacula, Apalachee and Flowery Branch next Tuesday at home. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. OCONEE BARBERITOS Despite the threat of severe weath er in the area, Oconee-Barberitos competitors were able to complete all but three events before the storms arrived. Quinn took second in discus with a throw of 92’6”. Alicia Connolly, Megan Steinocher, Lauren Scott, and as we are,” he said. Schroer is entering his second year as the coach of the Mill Creek girls’ team. This is his fourth year coaching the boys. Before moving to Mill Creek, Schroer spent eight years coaching at Dacula. Though Mill Creek is still a young program, Schroer said this year’s team has great potential. “We try to preach family. We try to preach being a unified team,” he said. “I think the kids have taken it one step further. They’re not just a tight knit family, they’re a unified program - both the boys and the girls side.” Brittany Westmoreland took fourth place and set a new school record in the 4 x 800 relay with a time of 10:23.40. Carson Simpson and Meghan Gordon also scored for Mill Creek as they tied for sixth place in the pole vault, both clearing 7’6”. The Mill Creek boys finished elev enth with a team score of 17 points. Andrew Tostes led the Hawks with six points, finishing third in the 800 meter run with his time of 2:02.24. Aaron Chamblee and Michael Kopanski scored points for Mill Creek in the pole vault event. Chamblee finished fifth, clearing 12’6”. Kopanski placed sixth with his vault of 12’0”. Ramael Wilson also scored for the Hawks as he finished fifth in the shot put. Wilson’s throw of 48’ 7.25” earned the Hawks two points. Mill Creek picked up another six points in the boys discus as Caleb Tarver and Kevin Darley finished fourth and fifth respectively. “We’re getting closer to what I want it to be,” Schroer said. “That’s a tribute to these kids. They love each other; they work hard for each other. They’re very supportive of each other. It’s the closest we’ve ever been to becoming a solid program as opposed to being a bunch of indi viduals.” While Schroer admits that ten nis is an individual sport, he said Mill Creek has unselfish players who want to help each other succeed. “I’m excited about it,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun to be around and a lot of fun to coach.
