Mill Creek H.S. students selected for Governor’s Honors Program
Art competition
announced for
area students
The Braselton Antique Festival
Association and Keep Jackson
County Beautiful are co-sponsoring
an art poster contest for students to
coincide with the annual Braselton
Antique and Garden Festival on
Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27.
The theme is “Trash to treasure:
Recycling” and entries should per
suade the public to recycle in order
to benefit the environment.
All entries should follow the theme,
but contestants have the option to
focus on either the broad topic of
recycling or a more specific topic.
Participants must attend West
Jackson Primary School, West
Jackson Intermediate School or West
Jackson Middle School. Poster size
can range between ll”xl4" and
22”x28” and the contestant’s name,
school, grade and teacher must be
clearly written on the back.
Entries are due no later than 6 p.m.
on Friday, April 18, at the Braselton
Antique Mall. Prizes will be awarded
in five different age groups.

Pre-K lottery
applications
being taken
Applications are now being taken
for Pre-K for all Jackson county and
city schools. The applications are
available in the schools.
The students must be 4-years-old
by Sept. 1, 2008, in order to attend
Pre-K. The child must live in the
attendance zone of the school.
Applications will be taken through
April 18. There will be a lottery
drawing and parents will be notified
through the mail if their child was
drawn for a Pre-K slot.
JCCHS, JHS
to hold proms
Prom season is approaching for
Jackson County high schools.
Jackson County Comprehensive
High School will hold its prom on
Saturday, May 10, from 8-11:30 p.m.,
at the Classic Center, Athens.
This year’s theme is “Evening of
Elegance.” The JCCHS prom king
and queen will be announced at 10
p.m.
JCCHS is selling tickets May 5-9 at
the school and Gordon Street Center
during lunch. Tickets are $35 each.
Jefferson High School will hold
its prom on Saturday, April 26, from
8:30-11 p.m., at the Jefferson Civic
Center.

Fifteen Mill Creek High School
students have been selected to par
ticipate in the 2008 Governor’s
Honors Program at Valdosta State
University.
Amanda Beaver, Emily Beck,
Linda Chen, Matthew Compton, Erin
Day, Julian Duque, Blake Elston,
Charles Evavold, Ryan Gasaway,
Bo Young Hong, Sue Kim, Midhun
Mathew, Laura Nuta, Deborah Soh,
and Stephen Zwick were chosen to
participate in the six week summer
instructional program. The program
is designed to provide intellectually
and artistically gifted students with
additional educational opportunities.
Students chosen for the program
must pass a rigorous selection pro
cess. The students undergo testing
at the school level and complete
a detailed application. The students
nominated by each school then par
ticipate in interviews and auditions at
the county level. A small percentage
of students will advance to the state
level interviews. Only 675 students
from the entire state are selected for
the program.
This year’s program will run from
June 8 to July 19. Students will have
the opportunity to study subjects
including biotechnology, environ
mental science, English (communica
tions arts), foreign languages (French,
German, Latin, Spanish), mathemat
ics, science (Biology, Chemistry,
Physics), social studies, visual art,
theatre, music, dance, design, tech
nology and executive management.
