SALOH
MCHS students to have art
BY KRISTI REED
Four Mill Creek High School
students have been invited to have
their artwork displayed at The High
Museum of Art as part of the Metro
Atlanta High School Art Exhibit.
The exhibit features outstanding
student art work selected by mem
bers of the Georgia Art Educators
Association (GAEA).
Seniors Tabita Birau, Ally Buker,
Carol Choe and Lauren Grainger
were chosen for the honor based on
the merit of the selected artwork as
well as the overall quality of their
art portfolios.
“All of these students have
accomplished some great things,”
said Mill Creek art teacher Mike
Lasseter. Lasseter is also a GAEA
member. He and fellow teacher
Kelly Guyotte were allowed to
choose a total of four pieces of art
for the exhibit.
Lasseter said he and Guyotte first
selected the students based on their
performance throughout the year
and then chose the students’ stron
gest pieces for the High Museum
display.
“They’ve worked really hard all
year and they’ve done amazing
artwork,” Lasseter said.
Birau, Buker, Choe and Grainger
are part of Lasseter’s advanced
placement (AP) art class. There are
19 students in the AP class, making
it the largest in the county.
“The class is very demanding,”
he said. "I ask for ten hours a week
outside time working, drawing and
painting because it is a college
level course.”
The students in Lasseter’s
advanced placement (AP) art class
have had the opportunity to par
ticipate in three major competi
tions this year: the Scholastic Art
Awards, the High School Drawing
Competition and the All-State
Festival of Art and Design. The
three competitions are juried com
petitions. Students are allowed to
submit artwork, but a panel of
judges decides which ones will be
allowed to participate in the show.
Overall, the Mill Creek art depart
ment had 13 pieces of art selected
for the three shows. Last year, the
school only had one chosen for the
competition.
“We’ve really stepped up the pro
gram,” Lasseter said.
Birau and Choe had pieces select
ed for each of the three competi
tions. Grainger’s work was select
ed for the High School Drawing
Competition. Though Buker did
not have any artwork selected for
the competitions, Lasseter said she
has worked very hard and done
some outstanding work.
For the High Museum exhibit,
Lasseter said he chose what he
felt was the best art work by each
student. Birau’s “Tea at 12” and
Choe’s “Fruits of Labor" were gold
key winners in the Scholastic Art
Awards.
Grainger’s “After the Rain" and
Buker’s “Glass Vases” were chosen
for their exceptional quality.
Lasseter said each of the four
students plan to continue their art
education beyond high school. One
of the students, Ally Buker, has
already been awarded a scholarship
to the Savannah College of Art and
Design.
“We’re very proud of them here,”
he said.
The 9th annual Metro Atlanta
High School Art Exhibit runs
from April 1 through May 4 at the
High Museum of Art in downtown
Atlanta.
