Jackson Co. Pre-K applications accepted through Feb. 28 Applications will be accepted for the Jackson County School System Pre-K program lottery through Feb. 28. This is for all Pre-K elementary loca tions in the county school system's district. Any applications re ceived after February 28 will be placed on the wait ing list and are not eligible to participate in the initial lottery drawing. Comple tion of an application does not guarantee that a child will be enrolled, but instead places the child on the list for the Jackson County School System Pre-K lot tery for 2022-2023. On March 11, six sepa rate drawings will be held to determine the class lists and waiting lists for each elementary school. The lottery consists of random drawings from all appli cants within each elemen tary school attendance zone. Once the drawings are complete, all appli cants will receive notifi cation by mail. If a child is not selected during the initial lottery drawing a waiting list information form will be included in the notification letter. The child will be placed on the waiting list only if this form is returned on or be fore March 31. The wait ing list will be first-come, first-served based on the order the completed appli cation was received. The following docu ments must be submitted in order for the application to be completed: •Completed Georgia Lottery Pre-K Application •Proof of Birth — Cer tified copy of birth certif icate (your child must be four years old on or before September 1, 2022). •Proof of residency •Photo identification of the person registering child •Child’s Social Security Card/Bright from the Start Social Security waiver form •Form 3300: Hearing/ dental/vision •Form 3231: Immuniza tions •Documentation of fed eral/state assistance The Jackson County Schools' Pre-K program is a lottery-funded educa tional program designed to prepare eligible four- year-olds for kindergarten. The program follows the Jackson County School System calendar: 6.5 hours per day, Mondays-Fridays, 180 days a year. Gwinnett Schools to host virtual certified teacher career fair on Feb. 26 Gwinnett County Public Schools will host a virtu al certified teacher career fair Saturday. Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. Administrators will be hiring in multiple subject fields for the 2022-23 school year, including mathematics, science, special education (all categories), elementary education, language arts, foreign language (Spanish and French), dual-language Immersion (Spanish, French and Korean), computer sci ence/technology. engineer ing. health occupations, speech-language pathology, and others. Those interest ed in registering for an in terview must be certified to teach or be certified by July of 2022. Those interested in at tending the career fair must complete the online applica tion to receive a unique ap plicant ID number. Register to attend the fair by using the applicant ID number. Presented by Akins, this entertaining evening is an opportunity to help raise funds to reduce the impact and occurrence of child abuse in Barrow, Banks, and Jackson counties. Proceeds from the live and silent auc tion dinner buffet will help child abuse victims begin the healing process and pro vide education to families to increase their parenting knowledge and skills for raising healthy, happy chil dren. Elachee Nature Science Center announces schedule of events Elachee Nature Science Center, located at 2125 Elachee Drive Gainesville, will host multiple events in March and April. All events will be held at the nature center unless oth erwise noted. The schedule is as follows: SCIENCE NIGHT AT LEFT NUT BREWING (MARCH 1,6-7 P.M.) Science night, hosted at Left Nut Brewing Compa ny at 2100 Atlanta Hwy., Gainesville, will feature botanist Tom Govus, who will discuss wildflowers and rare plants in Geor gia. GUIDED HIKE CHICOPEE BACKCOUNTRY TRAIL (MARCH 5,10 A.M. TO 3:30 P.M.) This hike, held at Chi copee Lake 2100 Calvary Church Road, Gainesville, coincides with the public opening of the new Chi copee Backcountry Trail, part of northeast Georgia's Chicopee Woods Hiking Trail system. To introduce the trail to the hiking com munity, Elachee will offer a free, one-way guided hikes at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., start ing at Chicopee Lake. Par ticipants will hike one way with a guide 4.22 miles along the new Chicopee Backcountry Trail. Hikers should be prepared to make the return hike to Chicopee Lake — 4.22 miles along the Backcountry Trail or via the Bridge/Lake Loop, approximately 3 miles — or have a vehicle parked at Elachee Nature Science Center. Pre-registration is required. This trail has difficult terrain and creek crossings and is not recom mended for novice hikers. Appropriate footwear and trekking poles are advised. During this two-hour event hosted at Chicopee Lake 2100 Calvary Church Road, Gainesville, partici pants learn to set up and use a telescope, then embark on a guided tour of the night sky to see the first quarter moon and bright seasonal stars. The program is rec ommended for adults and children over 8. Participants must bring a flashlight and pencil. The cost is $30 per telescope (one telescope seats five people) or $10 for those bringing their own telescope (limit five people per telescope). TO 3 P.M.) •Outdoor painting class: Elachee will host an outdoor painting class with HLK Designs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The cost is $55 per person. Artist and instructor Heather Li ana, of HLK Designs, will help beginner artists create a 12 xl2 wooden art piece during this two-hour class. Program fee covers the cost of all materials. This program will take place outdoors and is restricted to ages 13-and-over with a maximum of 20 partic ipants. Pre-registration is required. •Invasive species ID and removal course and hike: On this guided hike, par ticipants will learn how to identify Georgia’s common invasive species, along with the best techniques for their removal. The cost is $20 per person. The program, which runs from 1-3 p.m., is restricted to ages 14-and- over with a maximum of 20 participants. The hike is fa cilitated by Eco Addendum, a non-profit organization based in Decatur that teach es about Georgia’s diversity of native species to people of all ages through natural ist walks. Pre-registration is required. •Live animal showcas es: Participants can meet Elachee resident animals as part of an exploration of the center’s live animal exhibit, guided by an Elachee natu ralist. Pre-registration is en couraged, however, check with the admission desk the day of for available space. Sessions run from 11- 11:45 a.m. and 1-1:45 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Classes are held in-person and will take place over 10 weeks. Class es are limited to 25 partici pants. The cost is $275 for Elachee members and $300 for non-members. The 12th Annual Trillium Trek Trail Run and Walk will be held on the hiking trail system in the Chicop ee Woods Nature Preserve. Registration closes April 17.
