Born in Orlando, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Sidney Ricket Fabris and Idelle Hand Fabris; and mother to the late Michael Gene Compton, the father of her children, James T. Compton, and two great-grand children. She had worked as a dietician in several health care facilities in the Athens area. Mary is survived by her sons, Jimmy T. Compton and Robert F. Born in Toccoa on February 28, 1928, Mrs. Brooks was the daughter to the late Thomas Owen Goode and Lottie Smith Goode. She was a house wife and homemaker and attended Talmo Baptist Church, Talmo, Georgia. In addition to her par ents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Hanell Brooks; son, Anthony Harrell “Hal” Brooks; and siblings Frances “Nanny” Page, Quentin Goode, Owen Goode, Mary Louise Lanham, Doris Thompson, Katherine Goode, Thomas “Tinker” Goode and Patricia Goode. Survivors include three daughters, Deborah “Debi” K. (husband James) Banks, Talmo, Patricia “Tricia” B. Childs passed peacefully from this earth and into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, February 10, 2022. Affectionately known as “Papa”, he loved God, his country, family, friends and attending church. He was a member at Erastus Christian Church. Papa had a ready smile and friendly welcome for everyone he met. He lived his life as a simple testimony to his faith and to his motto that: you didn’t need a reason to do the right thing — you just did it because it was the right thing to do! Papa served in the U.S. Army for 20 year's, completing two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star'. He will be remembered and missed for among other traits, his love, kindness, honesty, concern for others, willingness to help and faithfulness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mazelle Childs; his wife, Martha Doss Childs; a son, Robert L. Childs; and a brother, W. Donald Childs. Mr. Collins was bom in Kannapolis, N.C. on August 18, 1938, son of the late George Daniel Collins and the late Ruth Teate Collins. He was a corxections officer having worked for Alaska Depart ment of Corxections and was a United States Air- Force Veteran. Mr. Col lins was also an Air Traf fic Controller and member and deacon of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Danielsville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, George Daniel “Danny” Collins and Charles Thomas Collins; brother, George Thomas “Tommy” Collins; and sister, Charlotte Bond. Mr. Gay was born in Sylvester, a son of the late Char lie Mac and Nora Blanche Pendley Gay, was a member of First Pentecostal Church of Athens and was retired from the U.S. Army after 23 year's of service. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gay is preceded by his wife, Myrtle Elaine Appel Gay; and brothers, Ralph, R.L., James and Glen Gay. Mr. Gay was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors include his son, Reverend Charles R. Published by MainStreet Newspapers, Inc. Week of February 20-26 Rachel W. Maples COLUMBIANA, ALABAMA — Rachel W. Maples, 78, Columbiana, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022. This is a brief history of the life of Rachel W. Maples - daughter, sister, friend, employee, Christian, aunt, wife and a best friend with her spouse. Rachel was born June 14,1943, in Winder to Ralph and Mary Wilson. She was the second child, with her older brother having died as an infant. She was followed by her sister, Martha, three years later. Rachel graduated from Winder-Barrow High School in Winder. She showed herself to be an excellent student, graduating near the top of her class. During her marriage to her husband of 43 years, she had numerous opportunities to travel abroad and throughout the U.S. She loved to explore new locations and made many lifelong friends during this time. She was smart, honest, beautiful, and the best partner and friend a husband could wish for. In 2001, Rachel had a major stroke which damaged her eyesight, speech and the right side of her body. She handled the setback with grace and aplomb. She taught herself to walk again, improved her speech and made herself understood. She took a very difficult situation and turned it into a personal triumph. After having an other stroke in 2020, her health continued to decline, and she passed away on the morning of Wednesday, February 16, 2022. Rachel was preceded in death by her father; mother; sister; and brother. She is survived by her husband, Travis Maples; two nieces, Ginger Moon and Mary Beth Burger; four step-children, James Maples, Teri Sain, Sasha Johns and Tabitha Maples; and many, many friends. Also, Rachel was a Christian and a hue believer in God’s Holy Word. She is at peace now, standing in Heaven with Jesus, looking forward to the eternal life promised in His Word. If you have never considered tak ing Jesus as your personal Savior, please do. You will be overwhelmed by His saving grace. Rachel will be cremated and there will be a celebra tion of her life in the next three to four weeks (TBD) and will be announced as soon as the final plans are made.
