A Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been terminated fol
lowing a fatal traffic accident in the city of Gainesville, according
to a press release.
Deputy Aaron Buchanan was off-duty but in his marked patrol
vehicle at the time of the collision, which occurred at approxi
mately 10:30 am. Thursday, March 3, on Dawsonville Highway
at Nix Drive.
The crash resulted in one death and one injury.
“I extend my sincerest condolences to the family that has suf
fered the loss of a loved one and the injury of another,” said Hall
County Sheriff Gerald Couch. “We are saddened and shocked by
the tragic crash that occurred this morning. Our employees are
held to a higher standard and they are entrusted to serve and pro
tect those in this community. While swift action was taken in ter
minating the deputy, nothing
can replace the loss of a loved
one. This deputy failed to fol
low his training and our agen
cy’s long-standing policies and
procedures and neglected to
obey state law. No one in law
enforcement should ever cause
the innocent to be harmed and
this type of reckless behavior
will not be tolerated by any
one.”
Buchanan had worked for
the Hall County Sheriff’s Of
fice since September 2016. He
had worked as a patrol deputy
for HCSO since Jan. 4.2021.
The Georgia State Patrol
is currently investigating the
criminal aspect of the collision.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Of
fice will provide additional
information in reference to
its investigation as it becomes
available.
The Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce plans to
coordinate a discussion among the county’s leaders and others
about the county’s future, especially as it relates housing and
growth issues.
President/CEO Jim Shaw told the chamber board Feb. 18 that
he proposed the chamber facilitate a broad discussion among
the various government officials and others in the county about
growth impacts in the community. “There are a lot of challenges
ahead of us in this county as we grow at such an incredible rate,”
he said. “I think it would be a great idea for there to be a larger
discussion about where we want to go as a county... and the cul
mination of that could be, for instance, a Jackson 2035 plan. “
No specifics of such a meeting have been worked out yet.
