WALTER MILLER Editor Cpl. Johnston C Woodall Assistant Editor Pvt. June Freed Secretary Cpl. Bernard Langella Reporter BLOOD AND GASOLINE Three items pop up in the news this week, which, when put together, don't make sense. First is the news that 600 men have gone through the infiltration course as part of their preparation to meet the enemies of democracy on the battlefields of Europe and Asia. Second is the news that every Academic will attend company meetings organized to put across the orientation program, a sort of “infiltration” course for the mind and morale, in which the soldier will understand why he must meet history face to face in Europe and Asia The third is the report that has reached headquarters that some SOLDIERS, who most of all ought to see the con nection between fuel and the war effort, ARE USING IL LEGALLY OBTAINED GASOLINE COUPONS' Clearly a few soldiers have gone through the infiltration course with out seeing the connection between blood and gasoline. Per haps, now that the reality of battle is more clearly impress ed upon their minds, they will see the connection between the life-blood of their comrade American soldiers and the life-blood of the war machine which we are piloting and driving into the homelands of the enemy. Let's put it this way: Last Sunday, while we were going through the infiltra tion course, we might just as well have been advancing on the enemy that was what we were preparing for, that’s what it was a serious rehearsal for Let’s think ahead: — While those bullets are flying around us, what is it that makes it possible for the American soldier to advance stead ily into the enemy lines 9 Precisely the knowledge that he is well-supported When he needs air support, he knows that the AAF will bomb hell out of the enemy, strafe enemy troops, and pro tect him from being strafed by the enemy (It takes 12,500 gallons of gasoline to train each pilot' Not to mention the fuel he needs for each mission.) The tanks which are opening up the way ahead of the foot-troops are each burning up one gallon of gasoline, or more, every minute that they are in action! Reserves are pouring across the ocean to support every soldier in the front line, eventually to relieve him if neces sary. The transports bringing thousands of fresh troops burn 33,000 gallons of fuel oil a day! The heavy bombers that are knocking the enemy’s mu nition dumps and supply lines out of the war, ruining the enemy’s morale to ease our advance, use almost 200 gallons of gas an hour And the airplane plant in New England which is turning out bombers of that particular type is burn ing up 800,000 gallons of oil a month! Soldiers must know all this. Certainly soldiers who have been in battle would never cut the throats of their bud dies by cutting off their gasoline supply. And certainly no soldier here at Benning, if he ever really looked into the question, could be guilty of the same treacherous crime. But clearly some soldiers have been gravely guilty of at least treacherous thoughtlessness. Maybe the infiltration course will teach them how im portant it is to feel that the mechanized parts of the Army are with you when the bullets are above you. But for the benefit of some slap-happy thoughtless soldiers among us who can’t see the connection between blood and gasoline, we seriously propose to the orientation officer that one item on the agenda of the orientation program be the connection be tween gas rationing and the infiltration course—the big one in Europe and Asia. Because every gallon of illegal gasoline that flows into a gasoline tank in America is a gallon of American blood spill ed on the battlefield.
