ORIENTATION PROGRAM
IN A DEMOCRATIC ARMY
Not just the best trained soldier in the world,
not just the best equipped soldier in the world,
but the BEST INFORMED soldier in the world
AND THAT MEANS COMBAT EFFICIENCY!
Once the American soldier understands tnat the Ori
entation Program is away of preserving the democratic
system even while we are at war, it should not be hard to
make a happy success of the entire orientation course.
Because, in essence, the Army’s orientation program puts
complete faith in the ability of the people to think for—
and govern—themselves.
In a fascist dictatorship ‘orientation’ is very simple.
The people have, even in peace, been deliberately misin
formed and uneducated and have always been subject to
blind obedience. Their orientation program simply con
sists of memorizing some slogans and untruths It re
quires no thinking and can tolerate none, because think
ing can spell only destruction of fascism, emperor wor
ship, militarism and nazism.
But “orientation” in a democratic army does require
thinking. It's harder that way, of course —just as mobili
zation is harder for peaceful democratic nations than it is
for people regimented from the cradle to the grave, so
orientation for a war is harder in a democratic army—mo
rale cannot be a matter of memorizing slogans from a
dictator’s mouth It has to grow out of the democratic
system as we have lived it—listening, learning, discussing,
comparing, thinking and finally believing what we decide
is right.
And that’s where the new course comes in The gov
ernment intends to provide us with the facts, the true in
formation about the war, our enemies, our allies, our pur
poses—the beliefs that we evolve from these facts will be
our own business. The government is convinced that
truths and facts can lead us only to valid conclusions
which will give us the best morale in the world.
From there on it’s up to the individual as
are all responsibilities in democracy — the democratic
structure depends upon the willingness of the citizen to
do his part in governing his country and himself. The
democratic system holds here too in the Army—the mo
rale that leads a soldier into combat, in a democratic
army, must come from himself. If it doesn’t, the “orienta
tion” of armies of Nazi and Japanese robots, with their
simple, memorized slogans, will beat us on the battlefield.
SOCIAL DANCE SURVEY
Women with amorous glances
Always get plenty of dances;
Girls who have hips, and who boast
Busts, get the best and the most;
Girls who have hips and have not
The latter still get quite a lot;
A hipless but topheavy dame
Manages to get just the same
Amount as do girls of low quality
Who like to engage in frivolity—
While those soldiers least like to truck with
Are the ones that I always get stuck with.

A certain personnel clerk at
Headquarters rushed to his desk
exclaiming that he had to type
out a Section VIII in a hurry.
He rolled the form into his ma
chine, pounded furiously for sev
eral lines, and then clapped his
hand to his forehead and moan
ed—
“My God! I filled in my own
name by mistake!”
• • •
Overheard in the Automotive
Section: All of the clerks refer
to The Infantry School as “The
Big House!". A master ser-
geant was asked to get together
a representative 'group of draf
tees and Regular Army men for
a news picture. He told his as
sistant:
“Get two men who asked for
it and two who didn’t.”

A veteran of an army regiment
that fought on Guadalcanal went
to the movies recently and “saw"
the Marines, conquer the island
and then turn it over to the
army.
“That's strange," he said sar
castically, “I wonder how some
of my buddies got buried there!”

A public relations reporter
asked a combat veteran whether
it was true that your rifle would
blow up in your face if you did
n’t clean it often enough.
“In combat,” the veteran re
plied grimly, “if your rifle does
n't work smoothly you just pick
up another.”

One night the 0. D reported
that the mess sergeant had left
the fans on in the kitchen, mak
ing so much noise that the men
upstairs couldn’t sleep.
The next day the mess serg
eant was ordered to move his
bunk—to a room directly over
the fans.
All quiet now, the O. D. re
ports.
Lent Finds Us Living
In Prejudiced World
By Chaplain Glenn S Reddick
The Syro-Phoenician Woman
The Gospel for the Second
Sunday in Lent, which was
March sth, has the story of the
Syro-Phoenician woman in it.
It occurs in the fifteenth chapter
of Matthew’s account, or about
the middle of the book.
The following events had pro
ceeded it according to Matthew's
account: The Baptism, The
Temptation, His Dwelling in
Nazareth, the choosing of the
Twelve, The Sermon on the
Mount, The Healing of the Gad
arene Demoniac After this Je
sus sent out His disciples. His
instructions were, “Go not into
the way of the Gentiles, and
into any city of the Samaritans
enter ye not but go rather to the
lost She sheep of the House of
Israel”. (Matthew 10-6)
It would seem to imply that
Jesus was filled with race prej
udice and was willing that all
Gentiles be damned. Following
this however He went to the
Phoenician region where He
cured the daughter of the Syro-
Phoenician woman. This act was
counter to His advice to His dis
ciples.
Now what was the idea of His
cure in this case? First He may
have desired to test the feeling
of the disciples who were pro
vincial in their thinking and
wanted nothing to do with this
Caananitish heathen woman.
Second He might have desired to
test this woman's faith. He al
ways advised that any one
should pray with importunity.
I like to think that Jesus
Christ changed His mind and
became more broadminded as
time went on. By a process
of evolution He became divine.
On the Cross by His attitude He
became God. This is rank heresy,
J know, but it makes Him a
grander, nobler character in that
He could be able to sweep away
the race prejudices of His youth
and love all men equally no mat
ter what nationality they were.
This Easter we find that we
are living in a world of prej
udices Now a prejudice is “a
judgment passed beforehand, es
pecially in advance of due ex
amination. A prejudice is a pre
conceived opinion favorable or
unfavorable. It is a mental bias,”
■ (formed because of dome im
agined or real injury). The sad
thing is that prejudice grows
with age. A man in his old age
is apt to become a bundle of

prejudices Prejudice is based
on emotionalism and has little
to do with reason.
We live in a world of race
prejudices. Judaism in Jesus’
day was filled with it. Jews had
no dealings with the Samaritans
Pilate was prejudiced against the
Jews. He had to put Jesus to
death because he was in debt to
Caiphas or because he had
slaughtered Jews upon assuming
office. Pilate’s unthinking race
prejudice had almost cost him
his job which his wife had se
cured for him thru her relation
to the Emperor. Today we find
prejudices galore. The Germans
have been brought up on it. We
have it in America. A Jewish
boy escaped from Germany told
me that there was more prej
udice against the Negro in Amer
ica than there is against the Jew
in Germany. For this reason I
am holding a communion service
on Easter morning at 8 o’clock
for the colored boys of my out
fit. A Negro chaplain will assist
and give the sermon. At Christ's
Altar there is no race prejudice
There are national prejudices
Some seem to think that their
nation alone is right. There are
two sides of every war and we
are probably all guilty
There are economic prejudices
The conservative economic group
hates the liberal group. The
word socialism is like waving a
red flag in front of a bull to
some people. The next world
war, which may come soon after
this, will be over prejudices con
cerning economic theories. God
spare us the day when we will
see the conservative nations at
tack Russia. I believe that it is
coming. It will be a Holy War
like all wars we have ever had
The last one was holy because
we secured prohibition for some
people who are prejudiced a
gainst seeing others take a drink.
The next world war will be holy
because “we are downing God
less Atheistic Russia,” which is
putting Christianity into practice
while we just talk about it.
