Today Tony enjoys playing
with the Profs and is of the
opinion that the Academic
nine will "snap out of it” and
play real championship ball.
As to the other clubs, Pirrello
believes that the Ist STR
Wolves are a shade better
than the 3rd STR Rifles,
thanks to "hitting power."
Tony meanwhile has a hard
time getting practice because

Prof Ten Wins 4-2
In Post League Opener
After spotting the Medicos a
two run edge in the first inning,
the Prof softballers bounced back
in their half of the first stanza
to score thrice and then added
one more for safety’s sake in the
second to win a 4-2 ball game
before a cheering crowd at Reg
imental Field Thursday in the
Post League opener.
Starting the game, Anderson
of the Medicos walked. Pond
was on by an error. Lanoux
filled the bases on another mis
cue. Anderson and Pond both
scored on Prothe’s long fly into
deep right that was finally taken
by Fenlon.
Academic Sammy Baum greet
ed Med Coffer’s third pitch in
the first inning with a sharp
single over second base. Genaro
was safe on a fielder’s choice.
Leßorgonne hit an infield drib
bler with Baum scoring, the bat
ter being safe on another field
er’s choice and Genaro rushing
to the third base cushion. Bar
rett and Hills’ long flies counted
Genaro and Leßorgonne on the
next plays.
In the second, Prof Fenlon
doubled into right. The Med
throw was wild at third and Fen
lon legged it in for the fourth
Prof score.
From the third frame on it

Play Academic Ten
Here At 6:45 P. M.
Tonight at 6:45 the softball
Profs face the strong Lawson
Field Flyers in a contest that
is expected to draw a large
crowd to Regimental Field.
The Flyers won the right to
play in the state tourney at
Atlanta last year by beating
Earl Varchminn’s celebrated
TPS ten, and they will un
doubtedly be able to teach the
Professors a few things to
night.
Tuesday the Prof ten meets
a new entry in the Post Leag
ue, the 135th General Hospital
on the Med’s home field.
with neither team able to solve
their slants.
The fielding gem of the day
was turned in by Fenlon, Aca
demic rightfielder, who raced far
back to the left to catch pinch
hitter Hurdles’ last-inning blast.
Cruiz was on the sack at the
time and the blow would have
been a homer, squaring the
game, if it had not been for Fen
lon’s phenomenal catch.

Wolves, Raiders,
Rifles On Prof
Diamond Card
The Prof nine will have a busy
week! Starting tomorrow at 7:30
p. m., Gowdy Field, they’ll meet
George Simmons’ Ist STR Wolv
es, who are nestling comfortably
atop the TIS ladder; then they’ll
grapple with the 4th Infantry
Raiders Sunday, 2:00 p.m?, Gow
dy, in their first league game;
and finally they’ll make a jaunt
out to Stroup Field to jostle the
strong 3rd STR Rifles Wednes
day, 6:30 p. m.
Lefty Jim Prendergast, Wolv
ves’ ace, will probably get the
pitcher's role in Sunday’s game.
The southpaw' chucker, already
credited with an 8-2 victory over
the Profs, sports a four-one win
record in this year’s TIS League.
Behind the plate will be big
Bob Taylor whose ninth-inning
homer helped upset the Profs
applecart in their initial go.
Manager Les Peden’s 4th In
fantry Raiders, always trouble
some for the Academics, may be
classified as “X”, the unknown
baseball quantity. But their best
hurler will undoubtedly start in
an effort to bump the Profs.
Wednesday’s affair at Stroup
Field will be Rifle-headlined
w'ith long Ewell Blackwell pitch
ing and Stan Sharp receiving.
Blackwell, besides having one of
the best pitching averages on
the post and the league strikeout
(36) record firmly in his pos
session, was a 6-3 winner over
the Profs in their first meet.
Profs Blast Rifles, Go
Into Second Place Slot
The Prof nine pulled up into
a two-way tie for second place
honors with the 3rd STR Rifles
by beating them 10-1 Tuesday
night at Stroup Field. The win
puts the Academics within strik
ing distance of the Ist STR
Wolves, now enjoying the top
notch in The Infantry School
League.
The Profs started the game
with blood in their eyes as they
took a 1-0 lead in the first stan
za as a result of Benny Zienta
ra’s homer, and were never
headed by the Rifles during the
entire fray.
In the second, the Profs added
another run on Pirrello’s double
which scored Herb Bremer. The
Rifles’ only marker, a home run
by Strukel, came in their half
of this frame.
The Profs widened the margin
in the third when Russo singled,
went to second on Zientara’s
sacrifice, to third on Niebler’shit
and scored on Lawing's bingle.
Score, 3-1 Profs.
In the fifth the Profs went
run-wild. Niebler led off with
a single. Lawing walked. Bre
mer loaded the bases when he
was hit by the pitcher. Niebler
scored on a passed ball and Law
ing tallied on Pirrello’s single.
Bremer scored when Glick mis
cued.
Zientara led off the sixth with
a one-bagger. Niebler strolled.
Lawing singled Benny home.
Niebler and Lawing both scor
ed on misplays. Bremer finish
ed out the inning with a long
homer.

RUNDUS EARNS 11-0 SHUTOUT
Rudolph R Rundus cemented
a warmer friendship with his
chief rooter, Pfc. Steve lacono,
by stepping out on the mound
Sunday at Gowdy for the Profs
to gooseegg Herb Moore’s 3rd
Infantry 11 to 0 before a fair
sized crowd.
Steve had the time of his life
as his tall ex-supply room boss
limited the Old Guards to six
scattered hits and fanned six
batsmen. lacono smiled broad
ly as Rudy’s mates went on the
rampage in the very first stanza
to cinch the ball game with four
big runs by virtue of singles by
Russo and Zientara, coupled with
a walk to Lawing and a double
by Bremer and a one-bagger by
Cox.
In the second, Steve content
edly watched the Profs garner
two more runs when old pal Ru
dy got on first on a catcher’s er
ror, advanced to second on Zi
entara’s grounder, and scored
when Donabedian fumbled Nieb
ler’s hard-hit smash. Lawing’s
terrific deep left-center triple
scored Niebler.

Pitcher's Battle
In a twirlers’ duel out in Har

bested by 4th Infantryman Abla
gan as the Academics went down
4-0 to the Raider ten.
The Profs outhit the opposition
4 to 2 but the 4th Infantry hits
were timely. Ablagan whiffed
11 men while Travers set down
five.

in the third when Cox walked,
took second on Hazzard’s error,
and scored on Tony Pirrello’s
single to center. Tony counted
on Russo’s hit.
In the fifth the Profs tallied a
marker the unearned way. Bre

ond on Cox’s force-out and came
home on two passed balls.
Harris walked in the seventh
and went to third on Fenno’s
single. Cox strolled to load the
bases. Tony Pirrello singled to
right scoring Harris and Fenno.
That closed the scoring with the
Profs way out in front, 11-0.
Hotsacker Pirrello led the
Prof hitting with two out of four
and drove in three runs to snatch
RBI honors. Other stars of the
day were Lawing and Russo,
who crashed triples and Bremer
who lashed out a two-bagger.
These three clouts were the only
extra base wallops of the game
for the Profs.
Herb Moore looked best for
the opposition when he left first
base to relieve Wilkins in the
pitchers’ box and throttled the
Profs to only three hits in 5 1-3
innings.
