The News page 2 AGC HELPLINE HOLDS WORKSHOP FOR AGLA INFORMATION LINE Volunteer counselors of the Athens Gay and Lesbian Alliance (AGLA) Information Line attended a day long workshop at theAtlanta Gay Center on Saturday April 12, 1986. The workshop was conducted by staff members of Piedmont Counseling Service (which has trained AGC Helpline volunteers since 1980) and a training team composed of current Helpline volunteers. The participants received training in listening skills, the helping process, making referrals and other skills connected with telephone counseling. "This was a real challenge for the training team-we had to try to condense what we take ten weeks to do for the AGC Helpline into one day. But it was good for us and we hope good for the folks from AGLA,” said Helpline Director Bill Gripp. AGLA volunteer John H. said, "The workshop was really great. The training reminded us again of the critical and sensitve nature of our work and the need to operate our line in a professional manner." The AGLA Information Line (Athens 404- 354-GAYS, Mon-Thurs 7 to 10pm) made a major change in late 1985. It had been located in a local Athens gay bar, but is now using a call-forwarding system so that volunteers can answer at home. Calls have been increasing especially after a recent advertising campaign which included posters on the local Athens buses. Anyone interested in working on the AGLA Information Line should call the line and leave a message during its hours of operation or contact Jon Whiddon, Information Line Coordinator, at regular AGLA meetings. The Athens Gay and Lesbian Alliance meets on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7:00pm, 4th Floor, Memorial Hall on the University of Georgia campus. I teach people to love themselves and as they learn to love and appreciate who they are, wonderful changes occur for them," said Hay. Hay has received a lot of attention from her assistance and. counseling with AIDS and cancer patients, many of whom have experienced remission of their disease. PEOPLE magazine wrote an article on the results of the holistic counseling work Hay has done with Louie Nassaney. Nassaney successfully placed the virus in remission by following Hay's visualization techniques and self love concept. Hay is a Doctor of Divinity, ordained by the Church of Religious Science. Brenning have, without authorization, requested and received withdrawal of a $4,540.00 grant application submitted by the Atlanta Gay Center to the Fund for Southern Communities, a locally based funding agency which has previously funded gay and lesbian causes. The Atlanta Gay Center submitted the $4,540.00 grant application to the FSC in November 1985 to support the AGC's Violence Stop-Line. The project grew out of the AGC's participation with the National Gay Task Force in a study of anti-gay and lesbian violence published and presented before the U.S. Congress in 1984 and by the general rise of homophobic violence caused by the AIDS crisis. The purposes of the project were to document crimes against gays and lesbians, use documentation to lessen crimes and provide support for the physical, mental and legal needs of crime victims. The project had widespread, enthusiastic support in the community from such groups as the Gay/Lesbian Police Advisory Committee, the Lesbian/Gay Rights Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia as well as the Atlanta Bureau of Police Services. According to the Fund for Southern Communities, Maurice | Weil III, who was defeated , for re-election at the AGC Annual Meeting on January 26,1986, spoke to the FSC about the grant by telephone in early February. George D. Brenning, who resigned as an AGC board member on February 2, 1986, wrote a letter to the FSC requesting that the grant application be withdrawn on March 12. The Atlanta Gay Center contacted the Fund for Southern Communities on April 14,1986, shortly after receiving a letter from FSC Grants Officer Edris Branch accepting "with regret" Brenning's March 12 letter regarding withdrawal of application for funding. AGC officials will meet again with the Fund for Southern Communities and attempt to secure funding for the project.
