Prom the Chair EDITORIAL PAGE In the three months since I became your board chair,a tot has happened at the Center. This is a recount of those three months and a look to the future. PROGRAMS We have continued to offer our alternative STD Clinic on both Mondays and Wednesdays, our Help—line has experienced an increase in the number of calls being answered, as well as the number of trained counselors answering those calls, and our adolescent support group has not only split into two groups so as to be more responsive to its participants, but has also expanded its meeting times from once every other week to once a week. THE NEWS has continued to supply the community with information and we have seen an increase in the number of hours that our reception desk has been stalled. We are currently planning more support groups to help fill the areas that are not currently being served. For information on any of our programs, please call the Center at 876-5372 or stop by. STAFFING Our Help—line has just graduated their spring class and with this comes the addition of eleven more trained counselors to staff the three helpline phones in which both the hearing and the hearing impaired communities are served. THE NEWS has also experienced some staff changes with our editorial committee currently acting as editor. March brought about the resignation of our administrator who has moved to California. Our new administrator, Richard Swanson, (see related article) will begin the first of June. Under the leadership of Board member Jamie Richardson, who has been serving in the capacity of board liaison to the clinic, we have experienced additional volunteers to the clinic staff. FINANCIAL Since we have always depended on the kindness of our friends for financial support, we are seeking out other methods of funding so as not to continuously go back to the well that has been drawn from on so many occasions. This is to include grant applications, selling of goods, as well as a new membership campaign. FUTURE So where do we go from here???? First, we need to hear from our community. We cannot know if we're providing the required services without some feedback. Second, we need bodies. With the arrival of our new administrator we will be able to have an individual on the premises more frequently than in the recent past Also, he will be co-ordinating the staffing of volunteers by contacting past and hopefully future volunteers to see where they feel they can be of benefit to the Center and where the Center can be of benefit to the volunteer. Where are volunteers needed???? We currently have two vacancies on our board of directors. Any individual who feels that he/she could be of service and is willing to devote both the time and energy required for this position should contact me. THE NEWS needs more writers but also we need a managing editor. THE NEWS is published bi-weekly; thus one would have to devote at least two periods of time per month. We are constantly in search of people with a few hours of time a week to donate to being a receptionist. This is a very important job as our receptionist is generally the first person that people come in contact with at the Center. First Impressions are " Everlasting! If you have health care skills you would like to volunteer, call the Center and find out how you can be of service to our alternative clinic. Maintenance f our facility is an on-going process which needs constant attention if the facility is not to fall into disrepair. Here are many opportunities to serve. Last, but definitely not least, whether you can or cannot physically support the Center, your financial support would be greatly appreciated. It takes about $2000 per month for us to remain open. All support is greatly appreciated. These are all volunteer positions and some take more time than others. However, all are equally important in getting the job accomplished. I can truthfully say, the majority of the time I have personally donated to the Atlanta Gay Center has been a worthwhile experience for me. IT'S YOUR CENTER BECOME INVOLVED!!! Due to a production problem there will be only one issue of THE NEWS during May. In June, we will resume our regular two issues per month. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have created.
