ITHER a little kerosene or a bit of
soap will stop the squeaking of the
door hinge.

When making pies, put the bottom crust
in the oven and bake a delicate brown,
then add the fruit or other filling, and you
will have pies with no soggy morse) in
them.
A child’s broom should find place in the
bathroom. It will be useful in sweeping
under the bath tub.
Cut sheets of tin foil and place under the
flower vase doilies and you will have no
trouble with any dampness affecting the
best polished furniture.
To clean soiled coat collars, apply ben
zine and let remain an hour or two, then
wash off with warm soap suds.
Dust should be carefully removed frcm
dresses, etc., before putting away. Shawls
should be folded in their original creases
and laid away, cloaks should be hung up,
gloves pulled in shape and folded in tissue
paper, laces carefully folded and put in a
box kept for the purpose. Veils, ribbons,
sashes and silk handkerchiefs will keep
fresh much longer if fo'ded and laid under
a weight. Shoes should have dust brush
ed from them, be smoothed by stretching
out the wrinkles and bending the soles
straight, and carefully put away.
Oae of the new culinary appliances is a
double flour sifter which deposits thefLur
from the first to the second sieve, thus les
sening the work of resisting it for certain
cakes.
To save many steps in the kitchen have
a small zinc covered shelf near the range,
where hot food, when removed from the
oven, may be placed. It also saves the ta
ble, and you avoid the danger cf being burn
ed while carrying it across a room.
Before baking potatoes, pour boiling
water over them and let stand three to five
minutes, according to size; then wipe dry
and rub all over with melted drippings.
They will bake in a fourth less time, and
the skin will peel as though they had been
boiled.
Traveling on cars makes some persons
sick. The Juice of a lemon will relieve
this distressing symptom in some cases; in
others, the little soda-mint tablets are
efficacious. A few drops of iisterine in a
glass of water taken in occasional sips is
said to be excellent.
When children are cross during cold
weather and cry without any apparent
reason, examine their feet, and you will
probably find that they are cold. Rub
them well to restore the circulation, and
see that the stockings are not too thin nor
the shoes too tight. A tonic might also
be beneflcia'.
Tablecloths worn at the edges, where
they always show wear first, are convert
ed by some thrifty housekeepers into
square table napkins and hemmed by hand.
This, however, does not seem so successful
a use of the exquisite damask as the circu
lar luncheon cloth made of the whole cen
ter. It may be cut somewhat smaller in
size than the table and edged with an ex
cellent quality of cluny lace. This should
be narrow and therefore, unpretentious,
and should be sewed on by hand, so that
when the half-worn linen damask suddenly
wears out, the lace may be reserved for
others of the same sort.
Woman’s Work.
Household china should be clear and
have as few decorations as possible. Such
colors as are used should be pale or almost
indistinct. The delicacy of chinaware is
what attracts; a heavy design is never de
sirable. Without referring to expensive
china at all, keeping in mind the most de
sirable q iality for the average household,
it is certain that at no time in past years
have such opportunities for procuring china
been presented as now.
The virtues of buttermilk are claimed to
be manifold. Among other advantages it
possesses a large share of the acid which
destroys the incrustations that form on the
arteries, cartilages and valves of the heart,
and it is asserted that a constant use of it
would free the system of troubles which
inevitably cause death between the seven
ty-fifth and one hundredth year of man’s
life. It may be used freely and to advan
tage by every one. Another point in its
favor:—in churning, the first process of di
gestion is gone through with, making it
one of the easiest and quickest things to
digest. It makes gastric juice, and con
tains properties that readily assimilate
with the digestive organs.
Fruit cake may be kept indefinitely if
wrapped in brandied cloths and put away
in a covered tin.
If oilcloth is given a coat of varnish
twice a year it wears longer, is more easily
kept clean, and does not lose the pattern.
In filling jelly glasses and fruit j%rs, put
a spoon in the glass and a long handled
spoon or a knife into the jw to prevent the
glass cracking. Putin the spoon before
and let remain a few minutes after filling.

CULTIVATING SLIMNESS.
Fat women must take this injunction to
heart if they want to be in style, for the
new modes will not drape over a fat figure.
The fat has got to come off quickly but
without harm, of course, and this means
only one thing can be depended upon. Ex
ercising or dieting are too slow. The fat
woman who wants to wear a form clinging
gown must make an immediate trip to her
druggist and get a case of Marmol a Pre
scription Tablets, which will cost her about
75 cents.
Taking one of these after each meal and
at bedtime should be enough to bring her
to the “losing a-pound a-day” stage before
even the first case is used up. It is hardly
believable that such delightful results can
be obtained without harm and for such a
small sum of money, but then, fact is
stranger than fiction.
Test the effect of these tablets by getting
a case yourself, either from the Marmol?
Company, Dept. ICS, Detroit, Mich., or
from any druggist. They are made in ex
act accordance with the famous Marmola
Prescription and, consequently, cannot
have any ill effects.
