Money—Highwayman—Blood.
x—Some time ago Mr. Cal. Haney w&l his
farm in Ben Smith’s district and moved
into the southern part of Gwinnett. There
was a balance of <I6OO due him, and < n
the sth Inst, he went up f r it. As he was
returning with the money about four miles
above LawreneeviHe he met a negro or a
blacked white man who asked Haney
among many other questfow if he had any
whiskey. Mr. Haney replied he had none,
Xyberduifjon the negro asked Haney it he
would take a drink with him. Mr. Haney
consented and still sitting upon his horse
raised the bottle to Ils mouth, and instant-,
ly the negro began stabbing him and stab
bed him seven times ifaree of which reach
the hollow.
At this sfltge of the tragedy one rein of
the bridle was cut, the frightened horse
dashed up tl e road with Haney upon him
—and in about fclty yards two other men
.jumped into the road and tried to stop the
horse. B«t the frightened animal ran to
Mr Joshua Arnold’s, about one-ka f of a
n 1 e from the affray, and stopped, and Mr
Haney wis taken inb) the house. He is in
a very critical condition, but it is thought
he will recover. Haney thinks he recog
nised one of the men who jumped into the
road. Much diligence is being exercised
and it is hardly possible that the highway
men will escape.
