We the Trustees and patrons of said school and

P. Gaiues, in order to inquire into some slander

this country relative to Mr. E. P. Gains’ being an
Abolitionist and favorable to Lincoln and his

A Sum for the Cabinet.
There are now about thirty thousand sol
diers in and aronnd Maryland, to hold that
“loyal,” independent and sovereign State in
subjection to the Federal Gbverntnent. If
anv one of Mr. Lincoln’s Cabinet is good at
figures, we propose the following sum for his
consideration :
If it takes thirty thousand soldiers to hold’
the little and ‘-loyal” State of Maryland in'
subjection, bow many would it take to sup
press rebellion in all the powerful find revol-'
ted States of Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee,’
North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Mis
sissippi, Alabama, Louisiana; Texas; and Ar-'
kansas ? Mr Lincoln’s war programme will'
require an army of at least five hundred thou
sand men to suppress rebellion, and then if
he could suppress it, ir will take a standing
army of at least three hundred thousand men
to keep it suppressed. This immense stand
ing army would cost us four hundred millions
a year in solid cash. Then we must estimate
that one third of our soldiers will die annual
ly in a hot and unfriendly country, which
will make a constant yearly drain of ono
hundred thousand Northern men to supply
their places. At this rate how many yeat<
would it take to depopulate the North ? If
the Republican papers correctly indicate Mr.
Lincoln’s plans, we advise his physicians ?0'
put blisters behind his ears, to draw off the
hot and acid humors of his brain ; for ho
must certainly be mad—stark, raving mad.—-
In fact, the whole party taTM a'ndact like bd'dj
lamites. — N. I’’. Day Book.
Albert Pike and the Indians. —A lettef
from Little Rock, Ark., says :
Capt. Albert Pike has been comft¥issi6'ned!
by the Southern Confederacy to rise and
equip a regiment of Indians for instant sen
vice. The Captain is an idol with the Indi
ans on our border. He has secured to them
so many comforts, and they arC so fOnd of
him, that he has often been urged by them to"
become their Chief, and he can readily pro
cure a command of five thousand of them if
necessary. He goes at once to the nation.-
Mr. Breckinridge.—The Memphis Argus
of the 19th instant puts to rest the Abolition
story of this gentleman’s taking office in the
Lincoln army. It says: “We are advised,-
by a reliable gentleman who was in company
with Mr. Breckinridge at Frankfort, Ky.,-
when the Abolition canard was telegraphed
to that city, that the charge was instantly and
indignantly denied, and that there never was'
the least foundation for its circulation. Mr.
Breckinridge had just closed a list of appoint-’
ments in Kentucky, and is now making her
culean efforts to insure her co-operation with
the Southern States. There is no more able
or reliable defender of Southern honor this
side of A bolitiotidorn than Kentucky’s favor
ite son—John C; Btockinridge.” .

ing paragraph t
The San Antonio Ledger learns by a gen
tleman just returned from the Leon, that the
IL S. Troops surrendered to-day to Col. Van
Dorn, without ffitich trouble. “Nobody
hurt.” These were the last of the Federal
Troops in Texas.
-Tishomingo County, Alississippi, gave

Getting Ready.—Privateering prepara
ations are going on briskly in New Orleans,
and also in other places, of which we shall
not at present make a report. The New
Orleans Crescent says :
In a few days—in a very short time—af
ter the thirty days elapse, privateer# by the
hundreds will swarm in every sea under the
canopyof heaven, for the sole andexclusive pur
pose of capturing, appropriating or difttroy
ing Northern merchantmen, wherever they
can be found. By the opening of fall, wei
expect our privateers-men will capttfre
one hundred millions or more of Abolition
property afloat,which,taten in connectionjwitli
the utter prostration of trade, will not ma
terially facilitate Abolition capitalists in mak
ing the tremendous advances Lincoln’s Gov
ernment will require before the first of Sep
tember. The wicked fanatics have a pleas
ant prospect before them 1
