Tlie Flag of tlie South.
DEDICATED TO GEN. THOMAS LEDWITH OF FLORIDA.
On the morning of the 31st- May, the Flag of the
Confederate States was found grandly floating from
astaff upon the Custom-House in Jacksonville, Fla.,
It was placed there during the night, by some un
known hand, creating an agreeable surprise and
naturally awakening emotions in the beholder, as
it for the first time met his view in the early morn.
The circumstance suggested the following lines:
Oh 1 say did yon see through the dawn’s early light,
The Flag of the South, now so madly unbraided,
’Twas flung to the breeze in the silence of night,
And blazed when the stars of the morning all
faded ?
‘Twas the Flag of the South
Now unfurled to the sky,
As free as the breeze that lifts it on high ;
And, oh ! maj' the South when her night gloom is
Rejoice in her morning, triumphant at last.
Some hand all unseen raised that banner in air.
Though Freedom beheld it, low bending her form
And saw the proud jewels that fell from her hair
Undimmed on the Flag that was set to the storm.
’Twas the Flag of the South,
With its stars ever bright,
In the sheen of the day or the gloom of the night,
And, oh '. may the. South, when the gloom speeds
Be pure as her Flag in the sheen of her day.
The Flag, Oh Columbia ! we cannot forget
Thy stars that have gladdened the world with
their light—
Thy stripes that with tears and with tempests are
wet—
Seem to fall and to droop in the chaos of night,
While the flag of the South,
Like a night rising star,
Or a new bursting meteor, streams grandly afar.
Oh ! the “Star Circled Banner” the South has un
furled ,
May it stream ever on till it blesses the world.
Oli! say can you see in the dim distant sky,
The stripes still aloft and the stars still aglow,
And feel not the sparkle of joy in your eye,
Or deep thrill of pleasure your bosom to know,
That the Star Circled Flag
Os the South will not drag,
Nor trail the old glories that clii’g to the rag?
. For her sons have the “Star Circled Banner” un-
And will bear it aloft till it blesses the world
Savannah Defenf.es. —The Savannah
Hepublicaii says: “In response to nu
merous enquiries [impounded through
the press of the interior, we would sim
ply say that within a week from to-day
no Federal fleet will be able to enter a
harbor nor iidet, or effect a landing of
troops, on the coast ot Georgia. Month
after month elapsed and the. State with
all the boasting of its Chief Executive
officer, and with over a million in his
hands for the purpose, did absolstely
nothing for our protection. She Con
federate authorities, to whom the mat
ter has been turned over, have recently
been industriously at work, and forti
fications, all along the coast, are nearly
comple cd.”
Public Sentiment in New Hampshire.
The Baltimore N.rchanrje publishes
the following extracts from a private
letter from New Hampshire :
“Men are not so anxious to enlist
now as they were previous to the light.
k friend of ours assured us last Friday, f
that the recruiting sergeant had been
ten days enlis ing ten men in Concord,
and a young man in Concord told me he
had been offered SSO bounty.
The writer adds :
“There is a great change here in pub
lic semimeiit within a mouth. There
arc 20,000 men in New Hampshire op
posed t<> the war, as at present carried
on to subjugate the South. Our first,
regiment will come home next week.—
Most of them, 1 learn, have got enough
of the war. They complain greatly of
the treatment they have received, and
say that they have been used very
meanly.”
The Concord (New Hampshire) Stan
dard says :
“It is very doubtful whether another
volunteer regiment can be raised in
this State. 'The people begin to feel
that the war is‘unjust ami cruel, and
that all who engage in it will be looked
upon as fighting for pay and not for
justice; ami that, however much they
may need employment to get a living,
they arc not going to robbing and mur
dering their Southern brothers. They
feel that if poverty should drive them
to commit such crimes, it would be far
Letter to commit them among the Abo
litionists of the North, who have c-.iised
their poverty ; and that is, doubtless,
their firm resolve.”
And again, the same paper remarks :
i’oor men you who depend on your
dailv labor for your support, God held
you '. We feel for you because A’C arc
one of you. Where do we find one dol
lar a day now, unless we enlist as offi
cers for this plundering war ? \\ here
shall we find our shilling a day if it
continues s : x months longer, when the
frosts and snows of another winter fall
around us ami our families ?
