WILLIAM ROOT A: SOH. !
f-th 1855,
THE FIGHT AT ROCK CAS TJLE. KEN
TLCKY.
A correspondent of the Nashville Un
ion end American gives that paper some
further particulars of the fight at Rock
Castle, on the 2 Ist, a brief notice of
1 which we Copied filoTß' the Knoxvilla
Register. The writer flays:
“Gen. Zollicoffer frad a fight with tfc-j
enemy on the bank this fiid'e of Rock
Castle River on Monday last. I give
the account as detailed here by Mr. John
Parker, of this place, who waa in Gen.
Zollicofier’a camp at the time of the fight.
The enemy had felled trees across the
road for a mile and a half. Our men
cleared the road for a half a mile under
fire of the enemy, who were on a high
cliff and overshot. Gen. Zollicoffer
could bring only about three hundred
men into the fight, and could not enD
ploy hia artillery. We took tWo of
their entrenchments and two cannon,
but did not hold them, in consequence,
it is said, of the ene ny getting into our
rear, when Gen. Zollicoffer fell back to
protect his wagon train. It was thought,
he would make an >ther attack the next
morning. We had five killed and twen
ty-two wounded on our side, and took
about forty prisoners, iind it id suppos
ed killed and wounded a hundred of the
enemy. Some of the prisoners tukeri
were irom Uh io. The enemy’s number
is supposed to have been 8,000. We
expected to get a» account from Con.
Zullic. ffer himself, of the battle, this
morning, but no courier came, though
there is :t daily line of couriers between
this point and the General’s camp.”
A GOOD ONE ON GENERAL MAGRU
DEK.
Everybody on the Ouachita riref,
and especially in Monroe and Trenton,
Lonisians, knows Nod Pb-lps, form r
clerk of the magnificent steamer Par
groud. Ned is a private in company
A, of the Crcsent Rifles, First Louie-’
iana Ba.tr.Hiou, better known as the
“Charley Dreux Bat;alien.” Ihis bat
talion was, and is on the peninsula, un
der Gen. Alagmder. The Gen. used to
take the troops under bis command, and
carry them on long and wearsome mar
ches through the peninsula. On one
of these expeditions be had murchcd—
so the boys say--thc Dreiix Battalion
16 hours,through a drenching ruin,when
finally, morning Came, with the “boys”
broken down and nearly famished. No
particular hardship in this, hs it is oc
casionally the fate of aH soldiers-*»HO
to supper. Gen. Magruder, being
••General,” went to a farm house, near
hi® encampment, and ordered a hot
breakfast. It was soon forthcoming,
and the General had just begun to en
joy it when Ned Phelps walked in, and
without suying a word to the General
<>r anybody else, commenced eating
very heartily. The General “leaned
back amazed, as at him gazed,” and
laid down his knife mid fork, with just
breath enough to ask: “air, do you
know whom yon are eating wi h?” Not
replied Ned Phelps, still helping him
self. “No, I don’t know whom I am
eating with. Since 1 cmne sddiering t
haven’t been at all particular ivhom I ate
with so the victuals were clean.
MOVEMENTS OFGEN. McCIEIEAK*
The correspondent of the Baltimore
Sun writes:
Great solicitude ia manifested in re
lerencc to the contemplated movements
>f Gen .McClellan, but of these no one
can approach the slightest idea. We
can only infer from facts as they occur
from day to day, thftt he has taken row
positions with no designs of abandoning
in rctrogade. My own impression is,
the army and naval expeditions will bo
operated as nearly as possible in har»
m >ny; that the former may, perhaps,
be more or les? influenced by the latter
Many others entertain a similar opinion,
it is'eviiicnf there is no want of mater
