pitcher Brian Shackelford was arrested on
suspicion of third-degree sexual assault.
The 29-year-old player was arrested
shortly after midnight at Miller Park,
where the Reds played the Milwaukee
Brewers on Wednesday night, police
spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said.
She declined to provide details on the
arrest other than to say it involved a
woman Monday.
Prosecutors have not issued any
charges. The Reds optioned the pitcher
to the minors and said they will not dis
cuss the case because of pending legal
proceedings.

there,” said Brunson. “I
talked to him on the phone
and he asked for some tapes.
He said I could fit in with
what they do there. I just
took it.
“They do kind of like what
we did at Houston County.
They like to run the fast
break. They’re not that big,
but they’re a pretty good
team. Last year they were
19-13 and finished third in
their region.”
Brunson’s first visit to
Mercy hurst North East is
Aug. 18. School starts Aug.
28.
“I don’t know what will be
going on when I get there,”
said Brunson. “I hope every
thing goes good, though.”
Last summer Brunson
played on an AAU team and
caught the attention of a
Mercyhurst North East assis
tant coach. Brunson said all
throughout the most recent
school term this coach tried
to contact him, but he never
heard from him. Then the e
mail came, and that started
the dialogue with the head
coach.
The Houston County
season ended in the Class
AAAAA state tournament’s
Sweet 16 round back in late
February. So it’s been roughly
four months since Brunson’s
last competitive basketball
game, at least from a high
school standpoint.

he decided to have it taken

That doesn’t mean Ayer
will be the only member of
the Perry club going - in a
roundabout way that is.
Joining him will be Ray
Tawney of Brunswick, Jeff
Coile of Hull and Ronnie and
Susan Miller of Cordele. The
Millers are actually mem
bers of the Perry Horseshoe
Pitchers Club but they are
also members - and will be
representing - the club they
started in Cordele.
As far as the venue this
year, Ayer who won his
world title in 2003 in Eau
Clair Wise., said he likes it
a lot better than last year’s,
which was in Bakersfield,
Calif.
He’ll still be pitching dur
ing the same hours of the
day - 11 a.m.-2 p.m.- but
in terms of temperature,
California during the tour
nament was “107” degrees
while Wyoming, he said, is
“mid-70s” in the daytime.
“It’s nice,” he said, adding
he has plans to do some
sightseeing of the Black
Hills. “Cold at night. Nice in
the daytime.”
In regard to the actual
competition, Ayer will be in
the J 2 Class. Each pitcher
will throw 15 games, five a
day.
The winner he said, add

“We play basketball eveiy

said Brunson. “That’s how
I stay in shape. I play with
teammates from my school
and Warner Robins and
Northside. I lift weights here
and there.”
Brunson’s high school
career started at Houston
County, then took a one
year detour to Northside his
junior season. The Eagles
won a region championship
with him on the roster, and
he added this was a positive
experience for his growth.
“It made me realize what

when I came back to Houston

“Last year I had two pret
