She said when football was
over, it was time to play bas
ketball, then when spring
rolled around you pulled out
the gloves and played base
ball.
“Now they are specializ
ing, playing one game all
year round,” said Lumpkin.
She added there is also a
danger of starting a child as
young as 5 in serious ath
letic training.
“They get burned out by
the age of 12,” said Lumpkin.
“For them it was a bad expe
rience and they drop out.
The reason is because of the
parents.”
“CTSA is concerned that
youth sports has become too
focused on winning at the
exclusion of the child’s well
being,” said Ron Stratten,
CTSA chair and vice-presi
dent of education services
at the NCAA. “Youth sports
offer children wonderful
benefits, including fitness
and character development.
But we are concerned that
issues, such as early sports
specialization, poor sports
manship and over-invested
parents seeking sports schol
arships, are threatening
to undermine the positive
experience of youth sports.”
In the area of parental
behavior and involvement,
the Report Card shows a
mark of‘D.’

SOCIAL CIRCLE -
Alligators in Georgia cur
rently have a population of
more than 200,000, thanks to
sound wildlife management.
Last fall, 500 permitted
hunters harvested 154 alliga
tors. The popularity of this
hunt has increased since it
was introduced in 2003, and
in response the number of
quota permits and areas in
which to hunt have grown.
This year, hunters will
again have a chance at one
of 500 permits and will be
allowed to choose a hunt
location from a larger choice
of areas. The season is Sept.
9-Oct. 1 but the deadline to
submit an application is July
31. Selected hunters will be
notified in early August and
will have the opportunity to
attend one of several volun
tary training sessions.

Lumpkin said the
Warner Robins Recreation
Department, which served
between 800 and 900 kids
for this year’s baseball and
softball seasons, has a man
datory code of ethics parents
must sign before their chil
dren can participate.
“We try to monitor the
program,” she said. “If you
do it right, you can weed out
the problems and get rid of
the bad apples. We do have
parents who take it too seri
ously.”

said there are instances are

when the families go home
after a game. For example,
she said a 7-year-old player
can be riding home and be

basketball studio analyst.
“Unfortunately, there are a
growing number of examples
where that is not the case.
As one who has enjoyed the
benefits of athletic partici

three young athletes, that is
terribly disheartening to me.
And it needs to change.”
