The National Vintage
Racing Association “Vintage
Thunder” racing series made
its second appearance of
2007 last Saturday night at
“The Melon”, (Watermelon
Capital Speedway) in
Cordele. Thirty vintage race
cars from Georgia, South
Carolina and Tennessee
were on hand for the race.
Stormy weather threatened
the area, but the rain stayed
away and the NVRA along
with the tracks weekly rac
ing program competed on
the 3/8 mile asphalt oval.
Also, two new cars joined
the NVRA as Bryan Cantrell
of Flowery Branch brought
his Mercury Cougar No. 3 and
Carl Durham of Mansfield
dusted off his ‘3B Ford coupe
No. 17 after a two-year hia
tus from racing.
In racing, Keith Brendel
of Leesburg won his fourth
feature race of the season in
the Late Model Sportsman
division driving the No. 27
Camaro. Chris Davis of
Cumming was second in a
Chevelle and David Adams
of Tucker placed third in
another ‘65 Chevelle. Gary
Brantley of Lawrenceville
crashed his Chevy Nova
during the heat race. Both
Brantley and Bryan Cantrell
failed to start the feature
race due to crash damage to
their cars.
Joe Evans of Anderson, S
C picked up his third Limited
Sportsman victory of 2007 in
his 6- cylinder powered ’57
Chevy. Durham, however,
was unable to make the fea
ture in his ’3B Ford coupe.
Jason Bowen of Bonaire
won his 10th Late Model
Modified feature of the year
in his 65 Ford Falcon No.
16 stretching his winning
streak to five in a row. David
Owens of Lizella came in
second in a ‘55 Chevy and
Woody Moore of Hawkinsville
finished third in another
‘55 Chevy, Dewey Stancil
