Contributed The National Vintage Racing Association “Vintage Thunder” racing series made its second appearance of 2007 last Saturday night at “The Melon”, (Watermelon Capital Speedway) in Cordele. Thirty vintage race cars from Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee were on hand for the race. Stormy weather threatened the area, but the rain stayed away and the NVRA along with the tracks weekly rac ing program competed on the 3/8 mile asphalt oval. Also, two new cars joined the NVRA as Bryan Cantrell of Flowery Branch brought his Mercury Cougar No. 3 and Carl Durham of Mansfield dusted off his ‘3B Ford coupe No. 17 after a two-year hia tus from racing. In racing, Keith Brendel of Leesburg won his fourth feature race of the season in the Late Model Sportsman division driving the No. 27 Camaro. Chris Davis of Cumming was second in a Chevelle and David Adams of Tucker placed third in another ‘65 Chevelle. Gary Brantley of Lawrenceville crashed his Chevy Nova during the heat race. Both Brantley and Bryan Cantrell failed to start the feature race due to crash damage to their cars. Joe Evans of Anderson, S C picked up his third Limited Sportsman victory of 2007 in his 6- cylinder powered ’57 Chevy. Durham, however, was unable to make the fea ture in his ’3B Ford coupe. Jason Bowen of Bonaire won his 10th Late Model Modified feature of the year in his 65 Ford Falcon No. 16 stretching his winning streak to five in a row. David Owens of Lizella came in second in a ‘55 Chevy and Woody Moore of Hawkinsville finished third in another ‘55 Chevy, Dewey Stancil See CALLAWAY, page 9B State champs Congratulations!
