HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL
. The four Ds of time management
Despite our strengths,
we all share one limi
tation. Time! No one
has more than twenty-four
hours in a day.
Many leaders drive them
selves to the limit trying
to cram in just a little bit
more.
In The Power of Focus,
Jack Canfield, Mark Victor
Hansen, and Les Hewitt
describe a process to “sepa
rate so-called urgent tasks
from your most important
priorities.”
They emphasize your
freedom to choose your
response to every situation
that arises. They suggest
that you consciously consid
er these four options, each
of which starts with the let
ter “D.”
Do it now. This is the
default method of manag
ing time for many of us.
When the telephone rings,
you jump to answer it.
When a letter shows up on
your desk, you react to the
request immediately.
Treating every new
demand as if it were urgent
overlooks the opportunity
to prevent future crises by
planning, training, doing
preventive maintenance,
or building relationships.
These important items lead
to greater effectiveness, but
they rarely call out to you
with urgency.
Most time management
experts recommend that
you schedule your day and
week based upon the prior
ity of each item. Priorities
should be based on how sig
nificantly it will contribute
to your overall vision, the
“macro” definition you’ve
given to your desired out
comes in life.
Still, things come up. If
it can be completed in ten
minutes or less, do it now.
Make sure you focus on that

leaders are not very good
delegators.
Too many times, indi
viduals equate “delegation”
with the previous option
of “dumping.” To delegate
effectively, you need to
know who has what com
petencies and interests.
Both are important consid
erations. Further, you need
to be clear about desired
outcomes and the conse
quences for the individual
in doing the work.
Thinking “Who can do
this well and enjoy it?” will
allow you to avoid doing it
all yourself.
Defer it. Be intentional
about this category. Too
often, items wind up here
just because you’ve not allo
cated time to attend to them.
That’s when piles develop.
Do you have an adequate
system for defining when
the topic should arise again
for your focus? Refine your
system so it works for you.
Then consciously insert
each deferred activity into
that system.
Mastering these “Four
D’s of Time Management”
will contribute both to “bal
ance” and “focus.” Both are
awareness items that will
strongly aid your success as
a leader.

What is a legal tiling deadline?
Dear Mr. Rockefeller,
I was involved in an auto
wreck recently and some
one was telling me some
thing about a filing deadline
I need to worry about. What
is this?
Dear Reader, Excellent
question! Most folks do
not take this into account.
This is called the “Statute
of Limitations” and limits
how long you have to sue.
It varies based on the type
of cause of action. In most
cases, the SOL is two years,
as it is for any case involving
bodily injury. Strictly speak
ing, you could actually have
different SOLs for different
counts or claims, in the same
complaint, against the same
defendant!
In your case, the appli
cable SOL means you have
just two years from the date
of injury to sue the driv
er of the other car. Failure
to file (and serve) a com
plaint within two years dis
solves one’s right to pursue
a lawsuit against another
- forever! Obviously, this is
a very important concept to
consider.
Two years may sound like
a long time, but in practice
it really is not that long. The
full extent of your injury can
not be known exactly, until
you know how much medical
treatment you might need.
In many, many cases, it may
take a year or longer to fin
ish medical treatment. This
does not leave much time
for you (or your attorney) to
pull everything together in

is not always just a question
of looking at two years from
the date of an incident. When
you are in a car wreck, it is
pretty easy to point at when
the two years starts to run.
But what happens if fraud
is involved? Or if the inju
ry is not readily apparent?
There are many ways for
these questions to pop up.
For instance, “toxic mold
exposure” cases present a
number of questions. Toxic
mold causes permanent and
serious health conditions,
particularly with the very
young, the elderly, or anyone
with a compromised immune
system. But when does the
injury start? When some
one first is exposed to the
mold? When the illness is
diagnosed? When the mold
is first discovered? Frankly,
there is no absolute correct
answer, as all three might be
the right answer depending
on the facts.
Another twist on the SOL
is that if you file and serve
a complaint against a defen
dant, it can eliminate any

SOL issues as to ALL pos
sible claims raised by that
particular plaintiff against
that particular defendant.
Thus, it is important to have
a correctly named plaintiff
filing the claim against the
correctly named defendant.
But a defendant, even if
not properly named, can
be deemed to have proper
notice of the claim (elimi
nating the SOL defense),
because the defendant was,
in fact, served.
Finally, there is something
called a “continuing harm.”
If applied to the toxic mold
situation, this would mean
that the “harm” might
extend over a period of time,
essentially extending the
SOL deadline, because there
is no specific event, as in a
car wreck case, precipitating
the injury. As you can see,
the SOL can be complicated;
make sure you keep your
eye on it and don’t miss the
deadline, or you will be out
of luck!
