Warner Robins metro area unemployment rate increases in July
By RA T LIGHTNER
Journal Staff Writer
The unemployment rate
in the metro Warner Robins
area rose to 4.3 percent in
July, up two-lOths of one
percent from 4.1 percent in
June.
While up, the employment
rate in Houston County,
remains below, the Macon
area 5.3 percent, the
middle Georgia area - 5
percent, state and national
rates - 4.9 percent, accord
ing to data from the Georgia
Department of Labor. The
others were also up from the
previous month.
The Warner Robins metro
service area includes all
of Houston County, metro
Macon includes, Bibb,
Crawford, Jones, Monroe
and Twiggs counties. The
Middle Georgia area includes
both the Warner Robins and
Macon metro service areas
plus the counties of Baldwin,
Jasper, Peach, Putnam and
Wilkinson. Unemployment,
according to the Department
of Labor, often increases in
July as students who entered
the workforce in June look
ing for temporary summer
employment are not able
to find jobs right away, and
recent high school and col
lege graduates continue to
seek permanent jobs.
Also, from June to July
of 2007, Georgia lost 24,400
payroll jobs, with 80 percent
of those among seasonal
workers in public schools.

4-H, one of America’s
largest non-formal educa
tion programs for youth,
per a release, makes a major
contribution to our nation
by “helping youth acquire
knowledge and develop life
skills that help them become
self-directing, productive
and contributing members
of our society.”
Today, 4-H involves more
than 6.6 million young peo
ple - from the city, from
the farm and in between.
They are learning practical
skills in hundreds of proj
ects, the release reads. “But
more importantly they are
developing attitudes and
habits that help them meet
the challenges of today and
tomorrow.”
4-H is family and commu
nity-oriented - 4-H members
devote much of their time to
community service in a wide
variety of projects, ranging
from helping the elderly and
disabled to restoring historic
sites, to landscaping public
buildings, to helping pre
serve their environment.
Going on tours, attending
special programs and par
ties, conducting communi
ty service, making things,
and sharing what they have
learned are some* of the
things youth can do in 4-H.
Per the release: “Through
their club experience, youth
gain skills in decision mak
ing, cooperation, and commu
nication. 4-H today is indeed
having a strong impact on
youth and on America.”
4-H meets at many schools
throughout Houston County.
Additionally young people
can sign up for either the
countywide 4-H Junior club
for sixth-eighth graders or
the Houston County 4-H
Teen Club for high school
students. Both groups meet
monthly in the evening and
are open to all youth.
