8A ♦ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2007 Warner Robins metro area unemployment rate increases in July By RA T LIGHTNER Journal Staff Writer The unemployment rate in the metro Warner Robins area rose to 4.3 percent in July, up two-lOths of one percent from 4.1 percent in June. While up, the employment rate in Houston County, remains below, the Macon area 5.3 percent, the middle Georgia area - 5 percent, state and national rates - 4.9 percent, accord ing to data from the Georgia Department of Labor. The others were also up from the previous month. The Warner Robins metro service area includes all of Houston County, metro Macon includes, Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Monroe and Twiggs counties. The Middle Georgia area includes both the Warner Robins and Macon metro service areas plus the counties of Baldwin, Jasper, Peach, Putnam and Wilkinson. Unemployment, according to the Department of Labor, often increases in July as students who entered the workforce in June look ing for temporary summer employment are not able to find jobs right away, and recent high school and col lege graduates continue to seek permanent jobs. Also, from June to July of 2007, Georgia lost 24,400 payroll jobs, with 80 percent of those among seasonal workers in public schools. Houston County 4'H enrolling new members Special to the Journal become involved by contact 4-H, one of America’s largest non-formal educa tion programs for youth, per a release, makes a major contribution to our nation by “helping youth acquire knowledge and develop life skills that help them become self-directing, productive and contributing members of our society.” Today, 4-H involves more than 6.6 million young peo ple - from the city, from the farm and in between. They are learning practical skills in hundreds of proj ects, the release reads. “But more importantly they are developing attitudes and habits that help them meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.” 4-H is family and commu nity-oriented - 4-H members devote much of their time to community service in a wide variety of projects, ranging from helping the elderly and disabled to restoring historic sites, to landscaping public buildings, to helping pre serve their environment. Going on tours, attending special programs and par ties, conducting communi ty service, making things, and sharing what they have learned are some* of the things youth can do in 4-H. Per the release: “Through their club experience, youth gain skills in decision mak ing, cooperation, and commu nication. 4-H today is indeed having a strong impact on youth and on America.” 4-H meets at many schools throughout Houston County. Additionally young people can sign up for either the countywide 4-H Junior club for sixth-eighth graders or the Houston County 4-H Teen Club for high school students. In metro Warner Robins, the number of jobs was down 100, or two-tenths of one percent, from 58,100 to 58,000. The number of initial claims for unemploy ment insurance was also up from June to July. In metro Warner Robins, there were 335 initial claims, up 27.9 percent from the 262 claims in June. It is also up 3.1 percent from the 325 in July 2006.
