Dozens of cats found abandoned

ATHENS - Animal res
cue officials are looking
for homes for three dozen
cats after discovering them
abandoned for up to sev
eral months in a northwest
Athens house.
The Athens-Clarke
Animal Control Division
removed the cats Monday
after a neighbor who is a
veterinarian spotted a dead
feline in the window of a
house whose owner was out
of town for the summer, said
Crystal Shultz, director of
the Athens Area Humane
Society.

animal control are keeping

announced that Solomon
Tyrone Daniels was sen
tenced Aug. 31 to an eight
year prison sentence and five
years supervised release by
the Honorable Hugh Lawson,
Judge of the United States
District Court for the Middle
District of Georgia. Daniels,
of Ashbum, pleaded guilty
Sept. 20, 2006, to the offens
es of operating an unlicensed
money transmitting business
and conspiracy to possess
and distribute cocaine.
He entered into a plea
agreement in which he admit
ted that he paid individu
als to transport illegal drugs
and their proceeds through
out Georgia and Florida.
The investigation by federal,
state and local law enforce
ment officers revealed that
Daniels headed a drug distri
bution organization that was
the chief supplier of cocaine
in Turner County and sur
rounding municipalities.

for them or enough money
for shots, spaying and neu
tering, Shultz said.
“It’s horrific that some
one would allow these ani
mals to starve to death,”
she said. “It also puts us in a
really tough position at the
shelter.”
Shultz declined to say
exactly where the house is
located for fear of tipping
off the owner, who is wanted
on charges of cruelty to ani
mals and abandonment.
The 38 cats may have
been cooped up in the house
for months, Shultz said.
They were malnourished
and becoming feral when

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
The Housing Authority of the City of Perry has
completed its FY 2008 Annual Agency Plans for review
by public housing residents and the general public. This
plan is available at the Housing Authority central office
located at 822 Perimeter Circle, Perry, GA 31069. The
purpose of this plan is to empower and equip the PHA
to exercise optimum flexibility in meeting local housing
needs within the community. This plan addresses the
Authority’s immediate operations, current policies,
program participants, programs and services, and PH A’s
strategies for handling operational concerns, residents
concerns and needs, programs and services for the
upcoming fiscal year. This plan also outlines the PHA’s
efforts in meeting the needs of the low, very-low and
extremely low income population in its community and
serves as management, operational, and accountability
tool for the PHA. The Public Hearing will be held
October 24, 2007, at 10:00 p.m. at the Perry Housing

University of Georgia
veterinarians gave the
cats clean bills of health
Monday.
The cats legally must be
held for at least five days,
and if they are not adopt
ed, can be euthanized. The
humane society euthanized
41 healthy animals last year
because it did not have room
or resources to keep them
longer.
Schultz asked that any
one interested in adopting
a cat or donating money to
help pay for medical care
and other expenses call the

John Lynn Fountain, Jr.
KATHLEEN - John Lynn Fountain, Jr., 55, passed
away Thursday. His father, John Lynn Fountain, Sr.,
preceded him in death. Survivors include his mother,
Leona Fountain, Kathleen; sisters, Barbara Yerse,
Ohio; Linda T. Sapp, Claxton, Georgia; Hope Johnson,
Warner Robins; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in
the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Burial will be
private.
Home invasion
suspect killed

BRUNSWICK - One
apparent robber was killed
and another critically
injured after they were
shot in a Brunswick home
invasion early Monday.
The two men kicked in
the front door of the home
on Wolfe St., where about
a dozen people were hang
ing cut around 1:30 a.m.,
Sgt. Kevin Jones said.
Witnesses said the two
men both drew their guns,
but one of the men at
the house pulled, out his
handgun and started fir
ing, Jones said.
One of the intruders
was shot in the side and
pronounced dead at the
home. The other was
shot in the abdomen and
was taken to Southeast

Police did not release
any names but said the
hospitalized man is 18
years old. Jones said he
was in critical condition as
of Monday morning, but
the hospital cpuld not pro
vide any further update.
The people in the south
Brunswick home were in
their late teens and 20s,
Jones said. The man who
shot the suspects does not
live at the house and is not
expected to be criminally
charged in the shootings,
Jones said.
According to Georgia
law, if a person is in fear
of great bodily harm or
death, that person can
use deadly force in self
defense.'
