This week in HHJ history:
30 years ago:
Georgia farmers - including a group locally - plan a state-wide
strike unless their demands for “100 percent parity” are not met. The
strike idea originated nationally in Colorado, with Georgia being just
one of 44 states in the mix. Also, the City of Perry is dismissed as a
defendant in a false arrest suit. The suit orginates when a local man
is arrested for selling marijuana but is later released and charges
dropped when it’s discovered he’s not the one police were after.
20 years ago:
Candidates for Houston County Tax Commissioner “beef up" their
campaigns as the voting date closes to within a week. Perhaps
you’ll remember these names from Perry Elementary School: Donte
Brooks, Shedrick Tharpe, Frankie Bridges, Milisha Alford and Marissa
Holmes. They are the be “standing broad-jumpers” in the first grade.
10 years ago:
Officials announce that the Dixie League Youth World Series will
be played in Perry. Also, local firefighters begin training on the Cairns
Infrared Imaging System, which allows them to see the outline of
heated objects to include victims, of course.

10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Each day the top 10
scores will be posted, and on Sunday,
the top 10 from each day will compete
in an even tougher test for a chance to
win the car.
All Georgia teenagers who are 15 to
18 (as of Oct. 4) who possess a valid
Georgia driver’s license or permit are
eligible to compete.

On Sept. 28,1 was headed to
Charlotte on 1-77 when my car
struck a tire in the middle of the
highway, damaging the air dam
and causing it to drag along the
road. Shortly after I pulled over
to the shoulder, a young couple
from Warner Robins named Greg
and Maggie stopped and offered
assistance.
Greg got the air dam off my
car and told me he thought it was
salvageable. I was able to travel
on to Charlotte and on Monday,
my local Toyota dealer was able to
put the same air dam back on my
