Paving the path to protection Special to the Journal According to a release from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, it has received calls from residents reporting they are concerned about unsolicited contacts from an asphalt paving company, or “companies”. The residents, accord ing to the release, have “expressed concern after being approached at their homes when they have not initiated such contact.” According to the release, in recent years, the Houston County Sheriffs Office has fielded “numerous” com plaints involving similar transactions. In most cases, complainst by citizens, the release reads, involve issues of workmanship and/or irreg ular pricing. Many of these incidents involve elderly resi dents in the community. Representatives of these companies will reportedly usually contact a resident and stat that they have asphalt available which is left over from another work site. The representative will then offer the citizens a reduced price for resurfacing a driveway or parking area. Later, the esti mated price may increase or the citizen may realize that the work product is inferior to normal standards. The Houston County Sheriffs Office reminds citi zens to be wary of any unso licited business calls to their homes. Citizens are further cautioned to proceed care fully and examine all con tracts and documents when conducting such business. Residents are advised to contact their local law enforcement agency if they encounter any problems when dealing with unsolic ited business contacts. ■M Wmm; Sfe^siSifrivKi
