WILLING TO RETIRE.
A certain prosy preacher recently
gave an endless discourse on the
prophets. First he dwelt at length
on the minor prophets. At last he
finished them and the congregation
gave a sigh of relief. ITe took a
.long breath and continued: “Now
I shall proceed to the major proph
ets.” After the major prophets had
received more than ample attention,
the congregation gave another sigh
of relief. Now that I have finished
with the minor prophets and the ma
jor prophets, what about Jeremiah?
Where is Jeremiah’s place?” At
this point a tall man arose in the
back of the church. “ Jeremiah can
have my place,” he said; “I’m go
ing home.”—iSan Francisco Argo

give adequate revelation. Quantity and quality of work never submit to the
same measurelt is time that something more was thought of the
large work that is being done in keeping the community in touch with divine
thought and suggestion Still, see ideals growing. See conscience
stirred and educated. See wrong hiding itself in the presence of larger de
mand for righteousness. iSee good strengthened by more patient attempts to
enthrone truth. There is need of a firmer faith in the added power given by
education to the Christian and church life.—The Standard, (Chicago, Ill.)
Earthquakes are calamities which cannot be anticipated and against which
no human ingenuity and skill can defend itself. They are the working of
God in nature. Many moral and religious lessons may be drawn from con
templating such a sudden and tenible visitation But the lesson
we would to-day impress is one of mercy and help to smitten, suffering man
kind.—:The Baptist Press, (Greenwood, S. C.)
The memory of the wicked shall perish, says divine wisdom. This is
demonstrated by the death of great men of this world, who were not Chris
tians. Who now thinks of A. T. Stewart, the “great merchant prince,” of
whom everybody was talking twenty-five years ago? His memory has perish
ed. \\ ho ever thinks of Bob Ingersol, unless some one mentions his name?
Like all infidels Ins name has already perished. Neither riches nor fame, nor
both can preserve such names.—The Baptist Flag, (Fulton, Ky.)
One may do well to look after the back yard of his own life. He has
sometimes a front that all men see and admire. Towards his friends and
neighbors he is careful to make a fair exhibition of good morals and cour
teous manner. He maintains a front with which no fault can be found. But
can the rear, the small and commonplace, the every day and out of sight part
of character and conduct bear the same careful inspection? Are there any
fair and fragrant flowers that spring up where no man ever looks, and only
God’s eye can see? Are not these things the true test of character, and those
that show the whole life pure and sweet, a good life all the way through?

Such natural phenomena as the recent performance of Mount Vesuvius
aie calculated to take some of the vanity out of mere man, and to even
make the scientists of the day feel that there is much for them yet to learn.-
