giving these girls their education, it will not do to turn them out in the
world, but we must try to cure the cause of this increase. It might be feared
that the development of the child would be retarded by association with other
feeble minded children, but this is not so in practice. It is really an advan
tage to the child, for with those of its own grade it perseveres and feels
the stimulus of rivalry, while with normal children it feels this mental infe
riority, becomes sensitive and discouraged,and gives up all effort to advance.”

The Fiction of Today.
Chas. Lamb’s rule for reading was “When a new book comes out, read
an old one.” If such a rule was wise in those days, how much more would it
be now! An enormous volume of fiction is being created, covering every im
aginable kind of plot, and seeking in every possible way to attract the atten
tion of the reading public.
Thousands of books are printed every year, varying in merit from those
that are really worth reading, to those that are extremely harmful. Many
are neither wise, witty nor wicked. They are not books except in so far as
physical form entitles them to the name. They contain printing and possess
length, breadth and thickness; beyond this, they are hopelessly inane, trivial
and without avail. Nothing happens in them; the characters are not in any
sort like real folks; their conversations are the baldest bedlam and their ac
tions inappropriate anywhere save in a home for the feeble minded. The
illustrations are usually attractive—and the binding and typing sell
enough copies to pay the publishers. The authors can’t realize much profit
from them. The wonder which constantly nags us is why people write such
books. We condone some conduct because it occurs in the heat of passion
and is done without thinking. These books are without thought—but further
