An English-Speaking Alliance.
By Thomas Bengough, Toronto, Canada.
The Canadian people have had the privilege and pleasure of listening to
an earnest apostle of peace, in the person of Mr. Andrew Carnegie. He was
the guest of the Canadian Club here on the evening of April 27th, and his
speech on that occasion will go far to counteract the “Jingo” tendencies of
some of our citizens, and to encourage those who have the broader vision of a
world-wide English-speaking alliance in the interests of peace, civilization,
and apolied Christianity.
Mr. Carnegie spoke as the world-citizen, the cosmopolite, which he cer
tainly is. A Scotchman of the Scotch, spending part of his time “on his na
tive heath,” he still keeps in touch with the United States through his mil
lion-fold interests there, and he constantly has. his ear to the ground to
catch the rumbling of any movement in the Anglo-Saxon world. He is ever
alert to tokens of progress in intellect, in culture, in industry; and his own
munificence in endowing public libraries is solidifying sentiment, enhancing
the value of .all our educational institutions, and ensuring new developments
in invention, industry and science.
The Canadian-American Object Lesson.
Mr. Carnegie’s utterances on his magnificent theme—the union of all
English-speaking peoples for the world’s peace—were strong, striking and in
spiring. He pointed to the object lesson often overlooked, which is afforded
by the chain of great lakes which form the liquid boundary between Canada
and the United States. By the Rush-Bagot Convention, which dedicated to
peace for all time these vast inland seas, Canada and America give to the
world the finest of all examples of peace among nations. These lakes remain
forever open pathways of peaceful communication between the two branches
of our race here on the North American continent, serving to bind them,
brothers as they are, into closer and closer union. If the European nations
followed our example, and had similar agreements, they would save the salt
seas from bearing upon their bosoms engines created by men for the destruc
tion of each other. Mr. Carnegie is optimistic on this point, for he said, “This
is to come some day, and sooner than most of us expect.”
The Laird of Skibo has great faith in the sober second thought of the
American people, and he scored “our fighting Jingoes in Washington” who
are insisting that the United States—“the industrial republic”—should fol
low the lead of Germany and England, and build an engine of destruction
to match the recently launched British battleship, “Dreadnought.” But in
Mr. Carnegie’s opinion the most powerful ship in the British navy is not the
Dreadnought, “but that tiny yacht on the lakes, flying the Union Jack, car
rying one tiny gun used only for exchanging friendly salutes of peace and
good will with a similar little craft flying the Stars and Stripes—that is the
most powerful, as it is the most beneficent, ship in all the British navy. Its
power for good transcends a score of Dreadnoughts. It is the true Dread-
