“The specific action of the poison now commences—viz., I paralysis af
fecting the nerve centers in the inverse order of their development.’
“The highest brain centers are the latest developed, and these are par
alyzed first and most.
*****
“Finally, the mind is a blank. Paralysis of all the higher centers is
complete; the victim becomes insensible; the muscular power of the limbs
gives way, and profound anesthesia results.
“If the alcoholic dose has been large, and still another tier paralyzed,
the respiratory function is lost, and the heart, whose center is first developed,
soon ceases to beat.
“Thus at the stage of complete intoxication all the higher centers—
moral, mental and motor—are paralyzed; the nerve centers are bathed in
blood saturated with alcohol, and surcharged with waste products, which
the exhausted circulatory system and reduced vitality are not able to elim
inate. ’ ’
Prohibition as Discussed by Royston Record.
In discussing the broad subject of prohibition for Georgia, the Royston
Record makes some strong editorial assertions from which we quote as fol
lows :
“The next contest for prohibition in Georgia will be the most monumen
tal our state has even seen. It will be a battle for the right against wrong;
a battle of our home against its most cruel and malignant enemy; a battle
of freedom against the vilest type of slavery; a battle for loved ones against
the one evil that brings wreck and ruin to them, and a battle of our women
and children against an awful desolation that God alone can repair.
*****
“Will you fight for your home and loved ones, or on the side of a gi
gantic whiskey corporation, headed by the great wholesale liquor houses,
aided by bought politicians and hired agents of this most relentless foe of
progress, religion and civilizaton?
“Whiskey is the most insidious foe to advancement.
“All other reforms which have stirred the people have in a measure
triumphed.
Temperance in the Land of the Mikado.
The Hon. Taro Ando, President of the National Temperance League
of Japan, is doing effective work in his country for the cause over which he
presides. As a matter of fact he organized the league himself and is deeply
interested in its success. From the original organization sprang other
branches all over the kingdom which were later federated into the “National
League.” This league publishes a national organ called “Kuni No Hikari,”
and the Hon. Taro Ando is editor-in-chief of this paper.
At one time of his life, however, he was a hard drinking man but since
his reformation he has allied himself to the temperance cause and works
assiduously for its furtherance.
“Sake” is the national drink of Japan and it is used by all classes and
in great quantities. It is a trifle less strong than ordinary whiskey but it is
consumed in greater quantities, being cheaper and its sale being almost unre
stricted. There are many kinds of this drink, the most popular being
Seishu. Strange to say the manufacture of the drink is kept almost a pro
found secret but it is understood by a few that its main ingredient is rice
which requires twice the fermentation process of corn or rye before it is
possible to produce an alcoholic stimulant.
During one process of this fermentation the consistency of the fluid is
that of rice gruel and in this form it is used by the masses instead of food
or drink. This is particularly true of the working class in Corea and as the
drink—called “Moromi”—contains enough alcohol even at this stage of its
manufacture to intoxicate, it is a popular beverage with the lower classes.
It has been said that its use is instrumental in maintaining the low moral tone
and the indolence of the poorer classes of Corea. Certain it is that Japan
will not be in position to claim the supremacy for which she is striving until
the free use of Sake is more restricted than at present.
