Prohibition Notes.
Within the very reeent past two parishes of Louisiana have voted out
the saloon. The State Chairman of the Anti-Saloon League for Louisiana is
Mr. E. E. Israel and he has cause to feel much encouraged by this stand.
Gov. John C. Beckham, of Kentucky, is now campaigning for re-election
and he has openly declared that he will stand for increased temperance leg
islation. This from a candidate for Governor from the Blue Grass State
means much to the cause of prohibition.
It is generally believed that the riots in Atlanta will ultimately result
in a general prohibition law for the state, and as a proof of the possible
prosperity of the state under such a regime the day of no saloons in Atlanta,
during the career of Henry Grady in the eighties, is being remembered and
commented on by thinkers everywhere.
The election in Oregon notes a gain for the cause of Temperance which
is of distinct importance, as six counties went solidly for prohibiten. The
Anti-Saloon League of that state has taken a positive stand, against the li
cense, and with the work that this organization is now doing it seems more
than probable success will attend, its efforts.
State Prohibition is the first step toward National Prohibition and it is
pleasant to note new organs in the different states as well as strong utter
ances by the old organs of prohibition. Ohio has a new state prohibition or
gan called ‘ ‘The Standard,” while in many states the denominational papers
are making strong prohibition editorials their leading feature. Notable among
the laater is the “Alabama Baptist,” published at Birmingham, which pub
lishes in its issue of Oct. 3, one of the strongest utterances for prohibition
which has been -written of late.
