GREATNESS.
There’s a glory in being right and a
splendor in being true
That is greater than anything else life
can possibly bring to you!
For a man can fight when he’s right
and knows that he knows that
he is,
In away that will make every blow
that he strikes a blow to make
victory his!
The greatest greatness there is that
the world can bring you
Is the glory of being right, and the
splendor of being true!

WHAT LEADING PEOPLE SAY.
Booker T. Washington.
I believe that it is vastly better for
all concerned for the negro to be ed
ucated by the South, for the most part,
for him to be educated by the South
so that he will keep in touch with the
conditions and opportunities that pre
vail in the South, so that he shall
always feel a sense of gratitude for
the education of his children to the
Southern white man who is right at
his door. I believe that the South
should, in the main, win credit for the
education of the negro.
Shailer Mathews.
There is a tendency to replace the
idea of romantic love that gives beauty
to life. I regret this because it is
likely to break down our civilization
and the sanctity of our family. If the
relations of men and women are to
be merely those of animals then we
are going backward in our evolution.
I do not see any help for any Chris
tianity that does not face this problem
squarely. If Christianity cannot grip
hold of this family problem and get
the spirit of Christianity into the low
est group of our civilization, then soci
ety is doomed and marriage ties will
be turned into mere conventionalities
and relations respectable enough, but
increasingly un-Christian.
Charles W. Fairbanks.
The strength and honor and per
petuity of American institutions de
pend more upon the influence and
teachings of the great Christian
churches than upon all other influ
ences combined and many times multi
plied. This is and is to be a Chris
tian nation. Its destiny is to be
governed by Christian people. Our
fathers walked by Christian faith,
and we are guided by that same
faith. We are carrying it into busi
ness and politics, and the more we
put into both the nobler will be our
ideals and the more thoroughly we
will be inspired by that spirit of
righteousness and justice which tends
to the welfare of the home, the ex
alation of the community, and the
glory of the state. We love and
we honor the flag, not because it is a
symbol of mighty power, not because
it is the emblem of victories in the
right upon land and sea, but beyond
all else, because it stands for the
justice and righteousness of a great
Christian people.
David Starr Jordan.
There is much to discourage in hu
man history—in the facts of human
life. The common man, after all the
ages, is still very common. He is ig
norant, reckless, unjust, selfish, eas
ily misled. All public affairs bear the
stamp of his weakness. Especially
is this shown in the prevalence of
destructive strife. The boasted pro
gress of civilization is dissolved in
the barbarism of war. Whether glory
or conquest or commercial greed be
war’s purpose, the ultimate result of
