The Highest Practical Education for the Making of Sensible, Useful Womanhood. For Catalog or Room

of the passengers in the ill-fated ves
sel, so many of whom lost their lives.
Instead of being panic-stricken and
losing self-control, she quickly buckled
on a life preserver and when she was
hurled from the deck into the dark
billows, although she was unable to
swim, she kept herself afloat and help
ed and encouraged others. Robert
Hawse, the gallant third mate of the
Columbia, who saved so many lives,
said of her:
“There is but one heroine in the
catastrophe which befell the Columbia.
That is Miss Watson. I was gather
ing in the second boat load when I
saw her with a woman clinging to her
and discovered that, while Miss Wat
son was provided with a life preserver,
her companion was not. There was
that slim wisp of a girl, paddling
bravely and telling the helpless woman
to keep a good hold and not give up,
for the boat was coming. When I
reached out for her she shook her head
resolutely and said I must take the
woman with her into the boat first.
I have seen many brave deeds and
have heard many in my seafaring life,
but never seen any to equal the way
that girl risked her own chances for
life by allowing a drowning person to
hold on to her while she herself was
struggling desperately to keep above
water.
“The women showed more bravery,
even more gallantry, in the moments
when death seemed so close at hand,
than did the men.”

JEALOUS OF HIS MASTER’S
BRIDE.
That dogs are affectionate is univer
sal allowed, and that they are jealous
no observer can doubt; but that a dog
may show true philosophy in accept
ing a hard situation is occasionally
proved.
A young man for some years own
ed a dog which was his constant com
panion. Recently, however, he mar
ried and moved with his wife and dog
into a house on the opposite side of
the street from his father’s house, his
old home.
The dog was not happy, for atten
tions which had once been his own
were now given to the young bride.
His master tried to reconcile him to
the altered state of affairs, and the
bride tried to win his affection, but he
constantly showed his displeasure
and misery.
One day his master came home and

sat down, putting his arm about his
wife. Jack was lying by the fire, and
he at once rose, approached the two,
and made the usual exhibition of his
disapproval.
“Why, Jack,” said his master, “this
is all right. She is a good girl,” and as
he spoke he patted his wife’s arm.
Jack looked up at him; turned away
and left the room. In a moment they
heard a noise, and going into the hall
found him dragging his bed down
stairs. He reached the front door and
whined to be let out. The door was
opened and he dragged the bed down
the steps and across the street to his
old home, where he scratched for ad
mittance. Since then he has never
returned to his master, and has re
fused all overtures toward reconcili
ation.

MACAULAY AS A BOY.
The prince of historians was indeed
a prodigy. When three years of age,
he asked a lady to walk in and he
would give her a glass of old spirits.
She declined, but he persisted, and
said that “Robinson Crusoe” often
took some. A servant spilled some hot
coffee over his legs, and when the lady
hostess asked him how he felt, four
year-old Macaulay replied: “Thank
you, madam, the agony has abated.”
He had a plot of ground marked out
with shells, and these the maid threw
away as rubbish. “Cursed be Sally,”
said he “for it is written, ‘Cursed is
he that removeth his neighbor’s land
mark.’ ” When seven years old he
commenced the modest task of writ
ing a compendium of universal his
tory, and actually drew up a capital
outline for the gigantic project. He
did write a theological tract at this
time. His poem upon the death of
Martyn, the Hindoo missionary, is a
most mature production for a boy of
eleven.
He was a fitting father to the man
Macaulay, of whom Lord Palmerston
said: “I should not care if I only felt
as positive of anything as Tom Ma
caulay is of everything.”
