AN ALL-DAY CIGAR.
Cigars a foot and a half long, which
are made for one day’s smoking, were
recently placed on view in the Ameri
can Museum of Natural History. With
them is a holder which looks like a
tuning fork and is large enough to be
used for pitching hay.
Far up the Rio Nigra, a tributary of
the Amazon, two explorers, Henry
Schmidt and Louis Weiss, made a col
lection of articles for the museum.
The Indians there made cigars eigh
teen inches long and as big around as
a child’s arm. One of these cigars
is too much for any ease-loving man
to clasp, so the Indians put the fra
grant roll between the tines of a fork
two and a half feet long, stick the
sharp end of the handle into the
ground at a convenient distance from
their hammocks, and take a puff from
time to time as they sway lazily back
ward and forward.
There are many other picturesque
articles in the collection, which was
made during a three months’ journey
from the coast. The material is of the
highest value, and nothing like it has
been seen, except a few articles in a
German museum. —New York Herald.

IN AN AWFUL FIX.
John C. Tobin, clerk of Division No.
3 of the circuit court, who has just re
turned from a visit to his old home in
Michigan, tells a good story on his
brother, Edward Tobin, conductor on a
Michigan Central train. The Michigan
Tobin runs between Detroit and Jack
son and officers are frequently on his
train with patients for the asylum for
the insane at Kalamazoo.
A few weeks ago a man at Ypsilanti,
Mich., became crazed on the subject of
hypnotism and was sent to the asylum
on Tobin’s train. When Tobin asked
for tickets the crazy man began tell
ing of his hypnotic powers.
“I’ll hypnotize you,” he said.
“Fire away,” replied Tobin.
The man made several passes before
the conductor’s face.
“Now you are hypnotized,” he said.
Tobin looked the part as best he
could.
“You’re a conductor,” the hypnotist
said.
“That’s right,” replied Tobin.
“You’re a good conductor,” went on
the hypnotist.
“Right again,” said Tobin.
“You don’t smoke, drink or swear at
passengers. You are honest. You turn
in all tickets and money you collect
from passengers. In fact, you do not
steal a cent.”
“That’s right,” assented Tobin.
The hypnotist eyed him a moment,
then said:
“What an awful fix you’d be In if I
left you in this condition!” —Kansas
City Star.
NOT EXPLICIT ENOUGH.
“But surely, you might at least have
made yourself a cup of coffee,” said
his wife, “my instructions were plain
enough. I told you two teaspoonfuls of
coffee and two cups of boiling wa
ter —”
“Yes,” replied her husband, “but
you didn’t tell me how to boil the
water.” —Philadelphia Press.
