The Geidea
BIG SISTER'S BEAU.
The leaves are growing ruddy as the
' sun begins to dip,
The birds are twitt’ring forth their
even-song;
Little Lucy sits expectant, with her
finger at her lip—
What makes her sister Alice stay so
long?
There are butterflies and dragon-flies
all ready to be chased,
There are daisy-chains to weave, there
are blackberries to taste,
Why not play about the meadows for
a while?
Why linger, linger, linger at the
stile?
Impatient little Lucy is a simple-witted
mite —
Her sweetheart days are future joys,
’tis clear;
Why should Harry keep his arm around
her sister’s waist so tight?
Why make her blush by whispering
in her ear?
The sun will soon be setting—Lucy
does not love the dark;
She does not love the silent bats that
flit across the park;
Since he met her, Alice might have
walked a mile —
Why linger, linger, linger at the
stile?
This dialogue, small Lucy, which seems
tedious as you tarry,
To Alice is a rather serious thing;
For it means that she and Harry have
this evening vowed to marry;
It means a cake, lace veil, and wed
ding ring.
And when a little brides-maid, uncom
monly like you,
Comes into church so trippingly, all
dressed in white and blue,
You’ll discover, as you reach the mid
dle aisle,
Why they lingered, lingered, lin
gered at the stile.

HER MISTAKE.
By Chas. C. Mullin.
The Temperance Leauge lady de
scried a youngster making for a
nearby saloon with a pail hanging
from his hand. With the best of inten
tions the lady thereupon hurried
across the street and headed him off
just as he came opposite the gin-shop.
"Little boy,” asked she, “did your
folks send you with the pail to that
saloon?”
“Yes’m!”
Her suspicion verified, she gave the
lad a short lecture on the evils of
saloons and the depraved actions of
parents in sending their children into
them for beer, all of which the lad
listened to without comment. When
she had finished, she took from her
hand-bag a coin; and on the promise
of the youth to return home with the
pail empty, presented him with it, and
stood off to see how he kept his word.
To her surprise and indignation,
however, the lad continued on his er
rand and deliberately entered the sa
loon. When he emerged therefrom,
a little later, she cornered him.
“What have you in that pail?”
“Nothin’,” returned he, removing
the pail’s cover in proof.
“Then why did you go into that sa
loon!” she demanded, eyeing him
sharply.
“ ’Cause me fader works dere. I
brought him his dinner!”
