A BLESSING AT JASPER.
We have had a great blessing at
Jasper.
Rev. Earle D. Sims, State Evangel
ist for Baptist Convention of Florida
and returned missionary from China,
recently closed a successful revival
meeting of several weeks in Jasper, in
which a good number were added to
the church. Mr. Sims was ably as
sisted by the regular pastor, Rev. B.
A. Geiger.
Mr. Sims is a large, fine looking
man of distinguished appearance, re
sembling Wm. J. Bryan, somewhat, in
physique, and is a fluent and versatile
speaker, with that air of indomitable
determination about him to accom
plish anything he may set out to do.
Fearless in speech, and calling sin
by its right name, he tells the plain
unvarnished truth, never seeking to
gloss over what he says by the thin
veneer of fine words; but on the
whole is of pleasing address. Among
other things he told of the evils that
surely result from dancing, card and
wine parties, and many other forms
of amusement that the masses indulge
in. He dwelt forcibly upon the dance,
its bad tendency to corrupt, and the
moral downfall to which it leads. He
gave several object sermons to the
children, which proved divinely in
structive, tending to the expansion of
the childish mind in giving it a clearer
understanding of the Savior and his
plan of salvation.
Mr. Sims was in China ten years.
He was there during the Boxer war,
and told of many of its horrors, and
the awful massacre of the missiona
ries and Chinese who had professed
the Christian religion. While there
he conformed to the Chinese customs
in so far as wearing their dress,
letting his hair grow long, etc. His
wife is a missionary also. They were
married in China, and took their wed
ding trip in wheelbarrows, after the
manner of the Chinese, and trundled
by the natives. They have one child,
Rochester Ford, ten years of age, who
was born in China. Dressed in his
Chinese costume, Mr. Sims recited
and sang old familiar hymns in the
Chinese language, but to us “Meli
cans” they sounded very heathenish,
indeed, and tickled the children im
mensely.
Mr. Sims is warmly enthusiastic;
his heart and soul is in his work, but
there is a thread of delightful humor
running through his sermons that cre
ates a hearty laugh at intervals, and
so relieves the weariness that most
often follows a long discourse where
the laugh is left out entirely. He ex
hibited a number of idols that the
Chinese worship and the small shoes
of the women showing how the feet
are cruelly bound.
On the last Sunday of the meeting
he started a subscription with S4OO,
donated by the State Board of Mis
sions, to build a new Baptist church
here, to be of white concrete rock,
and to cost not less than $3,500. Os
this amount $2,500 was subscribed,
leaving a thousand still to be raised.
Collections were also taken for mis
sions, the good cause Mr. Sims so
ably represents.
Mrs. Mitchell, a sweet singer, who
has a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice,
was with Mr. Sims during the meet
ing, and added much to the services.
Although an elderly woman now, her
voice is still full, rich and musical.
She is a native of Boston, a woman
of refinement and culture, and a fine
vocalist. She sang for years in north
ern churches and religious concerts.
And at one time was employed to sing
The Golden Age for January 16, 1908.
