UNDER THE ROSE BUSH.
“Oh, dear,” sighed the little plant
under the rose bush, “it is so sad to
be a weed!”
The rose at the top of the bush bent
a little in the breeze; then it turned
its face again to the sun.
“Why do you care, little chick
weed,” it asked kindly, “aren’t you
happy down there close to the
ground?”
“Sometimes I am,” said the chick
weed, “but all the same I wish I had
not been made a weed; no matter how
well you grow, or how bravely you
stand, if you are a weed it is all of no
account. Every day when the garden
er comes with his hoe, I crouch
nearer to your root, so that his sharp
eye will not find me. Some day he
will see me, and then my poor leaves
will wither in a rubbish heap; oh,
dear!” The little weed bowed its
head very low in its sorrow.
Just then the gardener’s little
daughter came running through the
hedge. She stopped before the rose
bush, and clapped her hands with joy.
“Oh, papa, here is a dear little
chickweed plant, right under the rose
bush! and oh, papa, may I pick
this lovely rose?”
“Yes, dear, you may pick the
flower,” said the gardener, smiling,
“As for the weed, pull it up quickly
and throw it away; I don’t see how
I came to overlook it.”
At these words, the little weed
shivered with fright; then a thrill of
delight went from the top of its
blossom to the tip of its roots, as the
little girl said, pleadingly:
“Please, papa, let me keep the
chickweed, —just this one little plant
out of sight under the rose bush;
Dicky bird does love it so, and I will
pick him a bit every day. Do say it
may stay, papa!”
“Well, well,” said the good natured
gardener, “just as you like, dear.”
Then the chickweed spread its
leaves gladly, and nodded its little
white flower in the breeze; for it
found there was use in the world even

SOME JAPANESE ENGLISH.
Though the Japanese have borrow
ed many things from us they do not
seem to have mastered our language
as yet, as the following letter shows.
It was received by an Englishman
who resided in the native quarter of
Tokyo. He had annoyed his neigh
bors by keeping geese, which dis
turbed the calm of the place, and
they accordingly resolved to send a
protest to him. This letter was the
result of their labors:
“Tokyo, January 3, 1908.
“Mr. John Bexington—Dear Sir:
We have already twice written of
your hateful geese cry with very
unacceptable, unbearable, uncommon,
uncouth, unquiet, and very loud voice.
Your hateful geese cry in ugly
stormy manner. Therefore, when
ever your hateful geese cry, our childs
are afraid and trembled with wonder.
In that consequence the healthy of
our childs is very injured.
“At the same time, we are al!
awakened from very early morning
and must heard of the hateful, un
quiet, unlikeful, ugly, loud voice of
your uninteresting geese.
“Whenever your geese cry unquietly
we all can think no thought. It is
frequent that the thought made is
partly trampled down by your hateful
and unquiet voice of your geese.
“Since you bought the geese we all
no case to think thought except in the
night.
“We and our childs are extraordina
rily injured, both material and ab
stract. Kill your geese or carry away
them to the distant place, and do to
make us not be injured by their hate
ful and unquiet voice. If you do not
satisfy our want, we all shall injure
you in return, too. Yours faith
fully. All Neighbors.”
A man must indeed be hard-hearted
to ignore such a fervent appeal; yet,
sad to state, the geese are still there,
though now and again one comes to
an untimely and suspicious end. —Tit

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT.
In six European countries capital
punishment is not meted out to
murderers, no matter how brutal the
crime may be or how much premedi
tated. These are Russia, Italy,
Switzerland, Portugal, Holland and
Norway. However, exception is made
so far as the lives of the rulers and
the heirs to the thrones are concerned.
The Canton of Zug, in Switzerland,
imposes the lowest minimum penalty
in the world, three years’ imprison
ment for willful homicide, the maxi
mum punishment being imprisonment
for life.
Os those countries which impose
the death penalty but rarely carry it
out, Sweden is most notable. Capital
punishment is inflicted by decapita
tion, but the penalty imposed for pre
meditated murder is almost invariably
commuted to penal servitude for life,
Capital punishment is inflicted in
France for premeditated murder, but
the crime is excusable where a hus
band has moral grounds for murdering
his wife.
Germany distinguishes between two
kinds of murder —one, premeditated
and intentional, is punishable by
death; the second, intentional homi
cide without deliberation, is punish
able by penal servitude for from five
to fifteen years.
Dueling in Germany is a misde
meanor of a special kind. Who kills
his opponent in a duel is not charged
with murder or manslaughter, but
with dueling, the punishment for
which is detention in a fortress for
fifteen years.
Spain has a death penalty, but
rarely imposes it, the customary
sentence for premeditated homicide
being penal servitude in chains for
life. A parricide is punished by being
imprisoned in chains “in perpetuity
