ENTERING THE GREAT COUNTRY
OF INDIA.
It was a brilliant day shortly after
sunrise when we entered the mouth
of the great river Ganges, whose out
flow of water is far greater than that
of our Mississippi, being measured by
the enormous sum of 1,800,000 cubic
feet per second, while the outflow of
the American “Father of Rivers” is
1,200,000. Paddy fields of vivid green
line the banks, and the scene becomes
exceedingly picturesque. Low-thatch
ed huts appear in the midst of palm
trees; here and there is a cluster of
plantain or bananas. Along the vil
lage rolls a cumbrous cart with heavy
wooden wheels, drawn by a yoke of
Indian bullocks. Interspersed among
the rice fields are clumps of high
grass, or flags, which we are told is
the jute. This is grown in all this sec
tion of India, and is an article both
of manufacture and of exportation.
The jute grows higher than a man’s
head. It is cut with a sickle close to
the ground, thrown by the armful into
a pool of water by the roadside, where
it is thoroughly soaked, and then beat
en. The fiber is extracted, carried to
the mills —which during the past ten
years have been erected by the score,
the tall chimneys of which are now to
be seen from the deck in every direc
tion —and there it is woven into sack
ing and gunny bags, to be used in ev
ery sugai’ and coffee market in the
world. There seems no good reason
why such an industry should not be
developed on an extensive scale in
Louisiana, Mississippi, and other
states bordering on the Gulf.
One of the most picturesque ob
jects during the trip of ninety miles
up the Hoogly to Calcutta is the na
tive Indian boat, which, with its high
prow and stern, floats like a cres
cent on the bosom of the river. One
or more swarthy sailors may be seen
with poles or paddles in the bow, and
a third in the stern directing its
course as he stands in bold relief
against the sky, with a white or red
turban thrown around his head,
while his black skin glistens in con
trast like polished ebony. In the up
per reaches of this and other rivers
there are thousands of these boats.
It is estimated that the river traf
fic of the city of Patna alone can be
measured by the registration of 61,-
000 boats as having passed up or down
in the course of a single year. These
are laden with rice, wheat, sugar-cane,
Indian corn, or jute. The river trade
of Calcutta alone amounts to SIOO,-
000,000. The loss of life on the water
and the low-lying islands, formed by
deposits left by the floods, must at
times be fearful.
The monsoon, which is the equiv
alent of the trade wind in other parts
of the world, is responsible for much
good and much evil. The southwest,
monsoon blows steadily for three or
four months, beginning about six.
weeks after the sun crosses the equa
tor northward. When the sun re
turns in its path, conditions are re
versed, and the prevailing winds are
from the northeast. The monsoon

from the sea is laden wita moisture,
and gives the rainfall, which amounts
to one hundred and twenty'inches at
Darjiling and five hundred and twen
ty-three inches in some portions of
Assam. When we remember that the
average is only forty-five inches in
Ohio, we are prepared to realize the
extent of water which deluges tue
southern slopes of the Himalaya
mountains and brings relief to the
parched earth which has been as dry
as a bone under the opposite mon
soon, blistering the land for months
previous like a sirocco. Lord Rob
erts, in his autobiography, describes
a terrific storm which occurred dur
ing his first year’s residence in In
dia, while stationed at Fort William,
in Calcutta. Lost in the darkness be
tween the mess house and the bar
racks, he groped his way amidst fly
ing timbers, falling trees, and helpless
birds, which latter were blown against
him with such force as to make them
drop at his feet. In his efforts to find
his way he ran against a stone col
umn, which served as a guide and en
abled him to find a place of safety.
In the morning the column itself was
found prostrate on the very spot where
he had stood, and kites and crows
were gathered up and hauled off by
the cart load. The cyclone of 1876,
with the change of the monsoon, sub
merged several large islands, engulfed
150,000 acres of land, and destroyed
2,000,000 people. On the other hand,
Bishop Thoburn says: “The land is
steadily gaining on the ocean; and
those who cultivate near the river not
only have their lands fertilized by
the deposits left by the floods, but also
at times secure new fields thrown up
in the course of *a few weeks, which
furnish fruitful farms for years to
come. I have myself seen wheat
growing rich and green on fields where
the water was flowing fifty feet deep
but six months before.”
R
AN AGE OF CHIVALRY.
When we speak of the age of chival
ry we are apt to imagine the existence
at an earlier period of a finer sense
of honor, of loftier ideals, of sublimer
courage, and of more devoted un
selfishness than are found in the
practical workadhy w’orld of today. As
a matter of fact, “very gentil parfit
knights,” such as Chaucer describes,
who rode about with a squire res
cuing distressed damsels and redress
ing wrongs generally, were very few.
The age was comparatively a harsh
and cruel one. Oppression and vio
lence prevailed, and human rights
and justice were little regarded.
Poverty was more general, and the
Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot reach the dis
eased portion of the ear. There is only one way to
cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies-
Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mu
cous lining' of the Eustachi an Tube. When this tube is
inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hear
ing', and when it is entirely closed, Deafness i s the re
sult, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and
this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will
be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused
by Catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition
•of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of
deafness (caused by Catarrh) that cannot be cured by
Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free.
