THE SUNNY SOUTH’S SHUT-IN FAMILY.
In the days of the old Sunny South I was deeply
interested in the Household, particularly in the shut
ins, who wrote so well and so cheerfully, though
their afflictions kept them from experiencing the
pleasures of active life. Tom Lockhart was the most
notable of the Sunny South’s band of shut-ins, be
cause he was so entirely helpless, ossified from head
to foot and unable to move any part of him, and yet
his mind was so clear and strong and his spirit so
bright and jolly. He wrote delightful humorous
sketches, and three or four books, two of which I
have lead, a charming volume of "Talks and Tales,
and a thrilling, uplifting novel called “His Myste
rious Way.” A friend who knows mr. Lockhart teiis
me that he has no amanuensis, but manages to
write by tucking the pen under his cramped and
rigid thumb and forefinger, both bent down toward
the palm.
There were other interesting and talented shut-ins,
among them Annie Peavy, of Peavy, Alabama, who
is well educated and writes a charming sketch, and
never walked and whose hands and feet are terribly
cramped. Yet Mattie wrote some delightfully art
less letters and a continued story, published in two
numbers of the Sunny South, and she wrote such a
pathetic, child-like letter about her dreams*of build
ing a tiny church in a grove which she could see

from her window (she had never seen a church or
heard a church hell) that the Household family gen
erously donated enough money to build a small
church on land given by Mattie's father. The little
girl's neighbors, all poor farmers, built the church
on days when they could not work tneir crops, and
a generous lady donated ten dollars to buy a bell.
So Mattie s day-dream came true and a happy girl
she was. 1 am particularly drawn to tne shut-ins
for the reason that we had a dear and cherisned
afflicted one in our family. She was my sister and
she was the loveliest creature I have ever seen. Her
dark hair curled in soft little rings about her flower
iike face and her eyes were blue as wood violets.
She was perfect in mind and physique until she was
a year old, when she was seized by a malady tnat
baffled medical skill. She was never able to walk
or to talk and her intellect remained that of a baby
until she died. Some have asked why was sue
sent to this earth, only to suffer and to be a bur

hearts with love and pity and made us gentle and
patient. W hat good her brief earth life of suffering

A SUGGESTION TO THE DISAPPOINTEED GIRL.
I would like to suggest to that dear young girl,
whose life has been saddened by her lover’s deser
tion, that she may find interest and comfort in estab
lishing a little kindergarten school for the very
young children in her town. Nearly every mother
would hail with delight the forming of such a school,
to which they could send the restless little ones for
a few hours in the busy morning, where they might
be amused and at the same time instructed, n a
shady back or front yard is available, the work may
be carried on out of doors, but a cool hall would be
all right, or a pleasant room furnished with only

tables and chairs. Cutting out pictures, making
scrap books, drawing on pads with colored crayons,
modeling in clay, making block houses, talks about
birds and animals illustrated by pictures, making
doll quilts, or doll aprons, or doll furniture—such
simple things serve to amuse a child and at the
same time help to unfold his mind. And nothing
brings such pure, sweet comfort as the love of a
child and the knowledge that you are making it
happy and helping its shy faculties to develop. I
know one young girl who, after being disappointed
in the man she had thought was worthy of her
love, formed a Sunday school “Cradle Roll,” and
went around to see the little tots through the week,
Helping them with, their little lessons and songs until
life took on a fresh interest for her and she got
back her cheerful spirit and her rosy cheeks. The
head of the Household (whoever she is who writes
Tie charming Chats) shows a true as well as a sym
pathetic knowledge of woman’s nature when she
says that pride and reason can not always be suc
cessfully called upon to heal a wounded heart.
Shakespeare to the contrary, I believe that women
and men have died of broken hearts. There are a
few cases on record where the heart itself became
diseased, but usually, as the writer of the Chats has
noted, disappointment in love depresses the vital
energies to such an extent that disease, ever watch
ful, steps over the lowered bars and takes fatal pos
session of life’s citadel. I feel sure that our young
friend is made of too strong fibre for this. In a
little while she will be able to throw off her gloom
and find the joy and sweetness in life that is the
natural right of the young and innocent.
