DRINK AND EMPLOYMENT.
More and more the idea is becom
ing effective that the man who drinks
cannot be trusted in a responsible
position. It is spreading among in
dividual employers and among the
firms and corporations, and more and
more the test of sobriety, or rather of
total abstinence, is applied.
In the case of workers on steel
structures the test is sometimes even
more severe, for they are not only for
bidden to use alchoholic drink, but,
in order to keep their nerves steady,
are required to refrain at noontime
from heavy eating. A large coal com
pany in Pittsburg recently announced
that miners who drink will be dis
charged, because disasters in mines
have been caused by carelessness or
incompetence, which in turn has been
caused by drink.
Never was there such a high sense
as today of the personal responsibility
of the individual man, and never such
practical, scientific knowledge of the
dependence of trustworthiness on a
sane body and mind. Business, which
is said to be sordid, is becoming the
chief advocate of temperance. Many
higher things are at issue in the li
quor problem than day’s wages and
capacity for labor, but the idealist
sees that strongest argument in
a world of workers is the simple one:
“You cannot afford it.” —The Youth’s
Companion.
AMUSING THE BOY.
A woman with a small boy ap
proached the gateman, who lisped
painfully, and asked: “What time does
the next train leave for B —”?
“Theven thithty-theven,” he replied,
and the woman and her young hopeful
retreated to the waiting room. She
soon emerged again, however, and ap
proached the gateman.
“Excuse me,” she said, “but wnat
time did you say the next train left
for B—”?
The gateman breathed a deep sigh
and answered laboriously: “At theven
thithty-theven.”
Once more the child and his ma
with drew and left the poor man in
peace. But he was not long to enjoy
this state of quiet felicity, for in a
few moments out she came again and
put the very same question.
A look of exasperation came over
the man’s face as he said: “You nath
lotht that train now, madam. I am
tho thorry. It letht at theven tlr'thty
seven, and it ith the latht that thopth
at B—.”
“Oh, don’t let that trouble you,” she
replied, with a sweetly patronizing
smile. “We really didn’t want that
train, but my little boy does like to
hear you say seven fifty-seven.”

USELESS SOCIETY.
Mrs. Jones often declared that she
really enjoyed a little chat with their
fish dealer because he was a man of
such original ideas, but one day, says
London Opinion, she returned from
market somewhat puzzled by his re
marks.
“I said to him, just in the way of
conversation,’ declared Mrs. Jones,
“that I had heard that a man becomes
like that with which he most asso
ciates.”
“ ‘That’s ridiculous, Mrs. Jones,’ he
answered. ‘l’ve been a fishmonger all
my life and can’t swim a yard.’ ”

A city that survives in legend, if
nowhere else, was kept clean by the
simple method of making every person
responsible for the neatness of his
own neighborhood. Similarly, parks
and picnic-grounds and resorts in gen

if everyone who goes pleasuring would
take care of the litter that he himself
creates. To all such Good Citizenship

Harvester Company, enable hay
raisers to do the work of baling them
selves and keep all the profits.
These presses are unquestionably
among the very best of their kind.
Both are of the full circle type, are
made exceptionally strong, are con
venient to. operate, require the small
est operating force, and, what is of
greatest importance, they do first-class
work. They put up bales that are
solid and shapely and enable shippers
to get greatest weight in the car.
Under fair conditions the two-horse
press will bale 10 to 15 tons a day,
the one-horse press 8 to 10 tons. Both
preses have large feed openings and
low step-overs for the horses. It is
worth while if you are going to buy
a press to get one that will enable
you to go right along with your work
when you get started. The I. H. C.
presses have large feed openings and
local agents can supply catalogs and
give full particulars. Call on them or
write direct to the Home Office.
